Tess Harper Career

Career

Harper began working in theaters, theme parks (including Dogpatch, USA and Silver Dollar City), dinner theater, and children's theater. She moved to Texas in order to appear in television commercials. The institution needed to produce a television show and asked her to be on the location, which she accepted. A casting person with Tender Mercies had to stay the night in Dallas and watched Harper's appearance on TV in a twist of fate. Robert Duvall was called by her mother and arranged an audition. Director Bruce Beresford was captivated by Harper and cast her in the leading female role of Rosa Lee, the young widow and mother who marries country singer Mac Sledge. Harper brought a kind of rural quality to the job, but not in the role as simple or foolish, according to Beresford. "She stepped into the room, and I thought, 'This is the girl to lead the way,'" Harper said about Harper. Harper was unaware of this and recalled shortly after the film's release: "I went to Breaker Morant and started sobbing uncontrollably halfway through the film." Because I was crying, a friend had to take me home, and I kept screaming, "You don't understand."

They're not gonna let me do this part!'"

Harper's debut feature film Tender Mercies was Tender Mercies. For the role, she received a Golden Globe Award nomination.

Harper appeared in Chiefs (1983) and Celebrity (1984), as well as many television films, including Starflight: The Plane That Couldn't Land (1985) and Reckless Disregard (1985). She appeared in Silkwood's full-length film in 1983. Harper was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Chick Boyle in Crimes of the Heart, directed by Tender Mercies director Bruce Beresford in 1986. She appeared in Ishtar (1987), Far North (1988), The Man in the Moon (1991), The Jackal (1997) and Loggerheads (2005). She appeared in Michael Jackson's "Black or White" (1991), portraying the mother.

Fairlight Spencer appeared on CBS shows from 1994 to 1995. She appeared on another CBS television show, Early Edition, from 1996 to 2000, and appeared on many other CBS television shows, including Early Edition. Gary Hobsen's mother appeared in this film. Harper received a Screen Actor Guild Award (in the Best Ensemble Cast category) with her fellow cast members in the Oscar-winning film No Country for Old Men, in which she played Tommy Lee Jones' wife.
