Terry Pratchett Life

Sir Terence John Pratchett (28 April 1948 – March 2015) was an English humorist, satirist, and author of fantasy books, many of whom were comical.

He is best known for his 41 books in Discworld. The Carpet People, Pratchett's first book, was published in 1971.

The Colour of Magic, Pratchett's first Discworld book, was released in 1983, after which Pratchett wrote an average of two books a year.

Snuff's 2011 Discworld book Snuff became the third-best-selling hardback adult-readership book in the United Kingdom since records were first published, selling 55,000 copies in the first three days.

The Shepherd's Crown, the last Discworld book, was published in August 2015, five months after his death. Pratchett, the UK's best-selling author of the 1990s, had more than 87 million books sold in 37 languages around the world.

In the 2009 New Year Honours, he was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998 and was honoured for his contribution to literature.

In 2001, he was named the first Discworld book to be published for children, The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.

In December 2007, Pratchett revealed that he had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

He later made a major public gift to the Alzheimer's Research Trust (now Alzheimer's Research UK), produced a television show chronicling his encounter with the disease for the BBC, and became a patron of Alzheimer's Research UK.

Pratchett died on March 12, 2015, at the age of 66.

Personal life

Pratchett married Lyn Purves at the Congregational Church in Gerrards Cross on October 5, 1968. In 1970, the family moved to Rowberrow, Somerset. Rhianna Pratchett, a writer, was born there in 1976. The family moved to Broad Chalke, a village west of Salisbury, Wiltshire, in 1993.

Pratchett was patron of the Friends of High Wycombe Library. He gave a talk at Beaconsfield Library, which he had visited as a child, and donated the funds from the event to it in 2013. He also visited his former high school to talk to the students.

Pratchett wore oversized, black hats more often than city gent," according to a description that was described as "more like a urban cowboy than a city gent." Concern about civilisation's future compelled him to install five kilowatts of photovoltaic cells (for solar energy) at his house.
