Ted W. Lieu (born March 29, 1969) is an American politician who has served as the United States Representative for California's 33rd congressional district since 2015.
The district includes a large portion of western Los Angeles, as well as Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Bel Air, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and the Beach Cities. After being elected to replace deceased Senator Jenny Oropeza's seat, Lieu served as a member of the California State Senator from 2011 to 2014.
After being elected to fill the seat of deceased Assemblyman Mike Gordon from 2005 to 2010, he served in the 53rd district of California. Lieu served in the United States Air Force from 1995 to 1999, and since 2000 has served in the Air Force Reserve Command in the City of Collegiate, earning him the rank of colonel upon his promotion in 2015.

Early life and education
Lieu was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He and his family immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of three. He graduated from Saint Ignatius High School in 1987.
Lieu obtained a Bachelor of Science in computer science and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Stanford University in 1991. He became a member of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity while studying there. He went to Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree and a graduating medal in 1994. Lieu was the editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Law Journal and received four American Jurisprudence awards while studying law school.
Personal life
Lieu and his partner, Betty Lieu (a former California Deputy Attorney General), live in Torrance, California, with their two sons, Brennan and Austin. Lieu is a practicing Catholic.
Lieu was known for rebutting Trump's tweets on his personal site, @tedlieu, well before Donald Trump's Twitter account was banned permanently. "I just decided that if Donald Trump would say 27 crazy, deceitful things a week, I would point out that he said 27 crazy, deceptive claims and not encourage him to get away with it." He continues to express his partisan views on Twitter.
Early career
Lieu served as a law clerk to Judge Thomas Tang of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Lieu joined the US Air Force in 1995 and spent four years as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps on active service. He has been recognized and honored for his work both nationally and locally, including the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. Since 2000, he has been serving in the Air Force Reserve. In December 2015, he was promoted to colonel.
Lieu was elected to the Torrance city council by on March 5, 2002, along with Mike Mauno and Pat McIntyre. They were sworn in on April 9 to replace outgoing members Marcia Cribb, Jack Messerlian, and Dan Walker, who had been elected mayor. Lieu served until his election to the state assembly, but Rod Guyton replaced him by appointment.
