Early life
Sheridan grew up on a ranch in Cranfills Gap, Texas. He and his family survived barely without having a stereo system in their house. "I would still be living there" if they hadn't lost the house in the early 1990s, said Sheridan. Sheridan left Texas State University and moved to Austin, Texas, where he mowed lawns and painted houses. Sheridan discovered a talent scout who urged him to go to Chicago and pursue an acting career while looking for jobs in a shopping mall. During his time as an actor, he stayed in New York City and Los Angeles.
Personal life
Sheridan has been married to actress and model Nicole Muirbrook since 2013. They now live in Weatherford, Texas.
Career
Sheridan began his career in acting, appearing in small films and in recurring roles in television series such as Veronica Mars, Walker, Texas Ranger, and most notably as David Hale in Sons of Anarchy. After turning 40, he began writing screenwriting. Sicario, Denis Villeneuve's first film as a screenwriter, was his first film as a screenwriter. It revolves around Kate Macer (Emily Blunt), an FBI agent who has been sent by a federal task force to capture a leader of a nimble and brutal Mexican drug cartel. Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro were also present in the film. With a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a number of awards, including a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Sheridan.
After Sicario, Sheridan wrote Comancheria. Comancheria came first but was held in development for a few years, until 2012, when it first appeared on the Blacklist. It was later renamed Hell or High Water and was published in August 2016, starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, and Ben Foster, and later received critical acclaim. Sheridan's screenplay received a significant amount of awards, winning the BAFTA, Golden Globe Award, and Academy Award nominations.
In a 2017 Rotten Tomatoes interview, Sheridan's first film Vile is credited as Sheridan's first film, but he does not see the film as his directorial debut.
Wind River, Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen's second film as director and third as screenwriter, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017. The film follows an FBI agent (Olsen) and a veteran game tracker (Renner), who are investigating a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation. The Weinstein Company had won the rights to distribute the film at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival but decided against it prior to the Sundance premiere. However, the company announced its deal to outhold it later in the year. Following a brief limited availability, Wind River was widely distributed in the United States on August 18, 2017. Wind River is Sheridan's third installment of "the modern American frontier," following Sicario and Hell or High Water.
Sheridan had been hired by Sony Pictures and Escape Artists to script the American version of the Matthias Schoenaerts drama-thriller film Disorder, a 2015 French film directed by Alice Winocour, on September 15, 2016. The remake's producer, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, and Tony Shaw were expected to produce it, and David Beaubaire was expected to direct it for the studio. James Mangold was supposed to direct.
Kevin Costner, a writer in 2017, created the television series Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner, which premiered on the Paramount Network in four seasons starting June 20, 2018.
Sheridan wrote Sicario: Day of the Soldado, a sequel to Sicario directed by Stefano Sollima and released in 2018. His overall contract with ViacomCBS was renewed more recently.
Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema acquired the rights to the film Those Who Want Me Dead, directed by Sheridan, in May 2019. On May 5, 2021, the film made its international debut in South Korea. It was first published in the United States on May 14, 2021.
