Tasmin Little (born 13 May 1965) is an English classical violinist.

She is best known and well-known as a concerto soloist, but she also appears as a recitalist and chamber musician.

She has released numerous albums, including winning the Critics Award at the Classic Brit Awards in 2011 for her recording of Elgar's Violin Concerto.

Early life and education

Little was born in London and is the granddaughter of Bradford-born actor George Little, who is best known for his role in Emmerdale Farm. When she first learned to play a recorder that her mother had given her, she discovered she first learned to read music at age six. She grew up in northwest London and gained a scholarship to attend the Yehudi Menuhin School as a weekly boarder between the ages of 8 and 18; one of her classmates was violinist Nigel Kennedy.

She was a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year's string section in 1982. After leaving school, she went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she earned a Performance Diploma and won the Gold Medal in the school's annual music competition in 1986.

She is best known for her participation in the Menuhin Competition for Young Violinists both as a competitor in the beginnings and as a member of the competition jury in recent years. She was the third prize winner in the inaugural 1983 tournament in Folkestone, after which she was named second prize at the following competition in 1985.

Career

Little's first professional appearance as a soloist was in 1988 with The Hallé. She made her first appearance at the BBC Proms in 1990 and has been back to work regularly since. Little has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and other leading orchestras over the course of her career, and has released over 20 albums.

Little has been a promoter of composer Frederick Delius' work throughout her career, as the artistic director of "Delius Inspired," an eight-day festival in Bradford that was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. For BBC Two, she has also produced a documentary on Delius.

In 2008, Little released The Naked Violin, a three-track album, as a free download from her website, with the intention of making classical music more available. Partita No. 1 of Bach was included in the recording. 3 in E major, Eugène Ysae's Sonata No.3 in D minor, and Paul Patterson's "Lus lawice" performed unaccompanied. The project received the 2008 Gramophone/Classic FM Award for Audience Innovation, and was included in an episode of The South Bank Show.

Little received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford in 1996, and the university's music school, the Tasmin Little Music Center, was named after her. She was named the Best of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors Gold Badge Award by the British Academy of Songwriters in 2009, and her album Elgar: Violin Concerto won the Critics Award at the Classic Brit Awards in 2011. In the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to music, she was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
