Hassan, his father, followed Kamel into film, becoming a cinematographer for Shell Oil's filmmaking branch, which made films about all aspects of Egyptian life, economic, and social. Shell had sent Hassan to train in London, but after the department closed down, he became an independent documentary filmmaker, filming 20 films with El-Tel-Quader's uncle Abdel-Qader. They formed El-Telmissany Ekhan, which is responsible for several important documentary films.
