Rivera grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where she lived until age 8. Since her father, Oscar Rivera, was sentenced to 30 years in jail, Rivera's mother moved the family to the city. Rivera remained a Baltimore resident for the remainder of her youth and early adult years. Rivera is of African American and Nicaraguan descent.
