She is the niece and nephew of film actress Martin Balsam and actress Joyce Van Patten.
She is married to John Slattery.
Early life
Balsam was born in New York City on March 5, 1959, to actor Martin Balsam and Joyce Van Patten. (mother) Her ancestry includes Russian Jews (father) and Italian, Dutch, and English (mother). She is the niece of actor Dick Van Patten, actress Pat Van Patten, and actor and director Tim Van Patten. Grace Van Patten, her cousin, is a performer.

Career
Balsam began her acting career on ABC's Happy Days and later appeared in a number of films, including Dallas, Taxi, Hill Street Blues, Family Ties, and Magnum, P.I. She appeared in a number of made-for-television films, including Kent State (1981), Nadia (1984), and Consenting Adult (1985). Balsam continued to act as supporting film actors and guest starred on television throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including The Cake Eaters (2007), Doctors (1998–04), and Without a Trace (2003–04).
