Tablo Life

Tablo became employed as a lyricist while still in high school. Under the supervision of Tobias Wolff, Tablo graduated from Stanford University with honors in English literature and creative writing. He then moved to Korea, where, in 2001, he formed Epik High alongside DJ Tukutz and Mithra Jin. The group has since released 10 full-length albums and 1 EP, with Tablo having produced and co-written all the songs. His debut solo album, Fever's End, was released in 2011.

Outside of Epik High, Tablo is a record producer and songwriter for other artists and involved in collaborative projects such as Borderline, Eternal Morning, and Anyband. His music incorporates numerous styles, ranging from trance, trip hop, to rock. Tablo is also the author of the best-selling book Pieces of You, published in both English and Korean, and Blonote. He made his film debut acting in Nonstop (2005). In 2016, Tablo left his radio show, MBC FM4U's Tablo's Dreaming Radio, after eleven years to focus on YG's music sub-label HIGHGRND.

Tablo Career

Life and career

In 1980, Tablo was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. He spent about three years in Jakarta before his family moved to Switzerland and Hong Kong for his father's work until Tablo was six years old, when they returned to South Korea briefly. When he was eight years old, his family moved to Canada again. Tablo was a student at St. George's School in Vancouver, British Columbia. He then attended Seoul International School. Tablo obtained a Bachelor's Degree in English literature and a Masters' Degree in creative writing in four years as a Stanford University coterminal student.

Tablo began playing piano at the age of six but then moved to violin, which he played for ten years. "Music is communism, but you're playing democracy," his music teacher, who had been a pupil of Isaac Stern, used to teach him. When Kim Gun-mo's album "Rainy Christmas" was released as he was sixteen years old, Tablo wrote the lyrics, as Kim expressed an obsession in Tablo after reading a poem of his own.

Tablo suffered from bouts of depression in his youth. Hip hop music served as an escape whenever he faced hardship. However, Tablo's father disapproved of his work choice as a youth, so he often left home as a teenager. Tablo wanted a friend to live out his dream, but when that friend died of cancer, it became an invitation for him to re-enter the music business. Even after the debut of his second album, Tablo confessed that his family coerced him to enroll in Stanford, and despite his later attempts to return to the United States to attend Law School. While he was at Stanford, Tablo, and part of the underground hip hop group 4n Objectz, he was also involved in a underground hip hop band.

In the underground hip-hop scene, Tablo met Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz. They formed Epik High and under the tutelage of Movement crew members, particularly CB Mass (currently Dynamic Duo), they attempted to record their first song with the hip-hop duo and close friends, TBNY (composed of Yankie and TopBob). However, CB Mass member Curbin is accused of embezzling Epik High and TBNY's funds for their first studio album, effectively causing CB Mass's demise (and the development of Dynamic Duo without Curbin). Woollim Entertainment, which at the time specialized on underground hip hop and modern rock, has finally signed Tablo and Epik High. Tablo made his official debut as the group's leader in 2003, alongside DJ Tukutz and Mithra Jin. Map of the Human Soul, the group's first album, was released on October 21, 2003. However, the album was a commercial failure due to hip hop's inability in South Korea at the time. The group wasn't until the debut of their second album, High Society, that it became more popular. Epik High's third album, Swan Songs, was supposed to be their last album; however, the album debuted at number one on several charts and took first prize in year-end hip hop competitions. "Fly," one of the album's top hits, was included on the soundtrack of FIFA 07. "Fly" was a CD sampler in Japan, and a CD sampler was released in Japan due to the numerous offers to remake "Fly" and "Paris" the second single from the album.

The group's fourth studio album, Remapping the Human Soul, debuted in 2007 and has since moved Epik High to the top spot for best emerging artist after selling nearly 90,000 copies in the first month. The album became South Korea's third best-selling album of 2007. However, many songs from the album were banned from several websites and the album purchase age was limited to 19+ due to several songs dealing with topics that the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in South Korea deemed inappropriate for younger listeners. Pieces, Part One, the group's subsequent release of their next album, which was also a commercial success.

Pieces of You, Tablo's book, was published in late 2008. Although the stories were originally published in English, the book was first published in Korean. In its first week of appearance, the Korean translation sold 50,000 copies in its first week of availability, and it topped the bestseller's list in Korea. The original English version was published in February 2009 and met with modest success. Critics praised the book, with Tablo's writing lauded as a first-time author. Tablo, alongside his group members, formed Map the Soul, the group's successor to Woolim Entertainment's contract, and the pair went on to debut an album under the same name. The company continued to release two more albums, including Epilogue in 2009 and Epilogue in 2010. In a chat with HiphopLE in November 2013, Tablo revealed the reason for shutting down Map the Soul, which was explained by a senior executive of Map The Soul.

After DJ Tukutz enlisted in his compulsory military service, Epik High will go on hiatus, although Tablo and Mithra will continue on solo projects until DJ Tukutz's return. However, a group of internet users raised concerns about Tablo's academic history in mid-2010, who specialized in English and Creative Writing at Stanford University. Two fan websites, most notably "We Demand the Truth from Tablo" (Hangul: ""), a Tablo fan, claimed that Tablo could not have graduated from Stanford University with both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in English and Creative Writing, respectively, in just three and a half years.

When one of Tablo's academic record was "not making any sense" and revealed what seemed to be inconsistencies in Tablo's transcripts, it became front-page news in Korea in June 2010. Even though Tablo released his official transcript and other legal papers online, many netizens refused to believe him and called for additional information, such as his immigration statement and diploma, to be released. Tablo debunked these charges by making the University registrar reprint his papers on film, and many of Tablo's friends and former Stanford professors all testified to the truth of his academic history on camera. The documentary was broadcast in two parts, "Tablo Goes to Stanford" and "Tablo and South Korea Online," which aired on MBC on October 1 and 8. However, despite the fact that Tablo and Stanford's administration are united behind Tablo, Tablo's membership in "We Demand the Truth from Tablo" soared to as many as 190,000 within a few days, as several netizens refused to believe Tablo or the documentary. Tablo and members of his family were killed, and he became a virtual recluse. Ultimately, Tablo left Woollim Entertainment after the Tajinyo incident, not intending to cause injury to the company or Infinite, who had only recently launched when the scandal broke out.

Tablo had indeed graduated from Stanford, according to police, who requested details beyond Tablo's already provided, which had not been released publicly from Stanford University. For the arrest of whatbecomes, who was revealed to be a 57-year-old Korean-American named Eungsuk Kim living in the United States, South Korean police obtained an arrest warrant domestically and with Interpol. In addition, twenty-two netizens were sent letters indicating that they had been sued by Tablo for criminal defamation. Following the findings of the probe, the fansite was shut down shortly after by its host site, Naver, which also revealed that whatbecomes had fraudulently used a friend's ID number to build the website, in breach Naver's terms of service. However, many members of Tablo 2 (Hangul: "2"), or " 2") for short), which has a following of over 33,000 netizens, despite evidence provided by both the university and the police that Tablo did indeed graduate from Stanford University.

Tablo will be signed to a four-year deal with them, according to YG Entertainment on September 27, 2011, and his first solo album will be announced on November 1. Despite Tablo's signing as a solo artist under YG Entertainment, he said that this does not mean Epik High was disbanded, nor that they would necessarily sign with YG as a unit. "Airbag," Tablo's new upcoming album's song, was released on October 14, 2011. On October 21, 2011, YG revealed that the forthcoming album, titled Fever's Conclusion (Hangul: ), had been divided into two parts. The first part of the series was revealed along with the new announcement, and the second part was announced on the intended launch date.

YG confirmed Epik High would return in October 2012 via yg-life.com following a three-year absence as a group. Lee Hi, SBS' K-pop Star finalist Lee Hi and was released on October 9, the company's first single, "It's Cold"), was released on October 9, but their comeback album, titled 99, was released on the 19th. Tablo performed with fellow Epik High bandmate Mithra Jin, Dynamic Duo, and Simon D for Cypher 2012, a remix of classic hip hop tracks of the year, to much praise on December 30, 2012.

In October 2013, Tablo and his daughter Haru appeared on KBS' The Return of Superman.

Tablo returned to radio DJ on April 21, 2014. Tablo's Dreaming Radio is his show's name. He was the DJ for this same service until 2016.

Tablo began collaborating with China's top female singer Bibi Zhou in March 2014.

Epik High's music video for "Born Hater" was released on October 18, 2014, after the video was postponed by YG due to the Pangyo Techno Valley Festival Tragedy. The track comes from Beenzino's eighth album, SHOEBOX, and it features a number of hip hop artists, including Beenzino, Verbal Jint, Mino of WINNER, B.I and Bobby of iKON.

Joey Badass, an American rapper and co-founder of Pro Era, released a teaser clip for a joint project on August 31, 2015. "Hood," their joint effort, was announced on September 5, 2015.

On January 26, 2017, he collaborated with Gallant and Eric Nam on the single release of "Cave Me In" and a music video shot in Hong Kong. "Cave Me In" premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 Radio Show and was on Facebook and Facebook for over 72 hours after being introduced.
