Sylvia Pankhurst Life

Estelle Sylvia Pankhurst, an English campaigner for the suffragettes, was a leading left communist and later an activist in the cause of anti-fascism.

She spent a large portion of her later life campaigning for Ethiopia, where she eventually moved.

Early life

Estelle Pankhurst (she later dropped her first name) was born in Drayton Terrace, Manchester, England, to Richard Pankhurst and Emmeline Pankhurst, who were both active members of the Independent Labour Party and were deeply concerned about women's rights. Christabel and Adela, Pankhurst's sister, attended Manchester High School for Girls, and all three became suffragists. Growing up in Manchester, Pankhurst, and her siblings were exposed to many styles of fine art. Pankhurst was captivated by the arts at a young age, so she enrolled the Royal College of Art to study a career in this field. When attending the academy in 1904 to 1906, she experienced the absence of gender parity in the art profession.

Pankhurst and her allies founded the East London Confederation of Suffragettes in 1912, which later became a WSPU affiliate.

Sylvia Pankhurst studied at the Manchester School of Art and obtained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in South Kensington, London, in 1900.
