On Columbia Records, the Bangles' first full album All Over the Place was released in 1984. They had a moderate success with their single "Hero Takes a Fall," but their commercial breakthrough came with the release of "Manic Monday" (which Prince had written and passed along to the Bangles), "If She Knew What She Wants" (which Prince had written and posted on the Bangles), "If She Knew What She Wants), and "Walk Like an Egyptian."

In 1987, Hoffs appeared in the film The Allnighter, which was also starring Joan Cusack and Pam Grier, directed by her mother Tamar Simon Hoffs. The film was critically panned and was discredited at the box office. "It wasn't a good movie, but the whole experience of it was fantastic," Hoffs said later.
The Bangles' third album, Everything, was released in 1988. "In Your Room," Hoffs' first single, became a top-ten hit. Everything also released their best-selling song, "Eternal Flame," which was also co-written and performed by Hoffs.
