Lee Soon-gyu (born May 15, 1989), also known as Sunny, is an American singer and entertainer based in South Korea.

She debuted as a member of Girls' Generation (and later its subgroup Girls' Generation-Oh!GG) in August 2007, becoming one of South Korea's most influential girl groups worldwide and one of the top-selling artists.

Sunny has been involved in many side projects, including original soundtracks, television variety shows, musical performing, and radio broadcasting.

Life and career

Sunny was born in Orange County, California, on May 15, 1989. Her family is made up of her parents and two younger sisters who are ten and fifteen years older than her. The birthdays of she and her siblings are the same. Lee Soo-man, the man behind SM Entertainment, is Sunny's paternal uncle. When she was still an infant, her family migrated to Kuwait and then South Korea shortly after, just after the Gulf War. Sunny grew up being afraid of loud noises as a result of her brief war experience. Her father, who was in a college band, was influenced to be a singer. Sunny joined SM Entertainment in 1998 and spent five years as a trainee. She joined the Starworld agency, where her father worked as a director, and was due to make her debut in a duo group called Sugar. The company, on the other hand, never came to fruition. Ayumi Lee, a singer from early 2007, convinced Sunny to return to SM Entertainment. She continued her education there and made her official debut as a member of Girls' Generation in August 2007. With the debut of their hit single "Gee" in 2009, the band gained a lot of attention.

Sunny has been involved in a variety of side-projects in addition to Girls' Generations' activities. Sunny appeared as a co-host of the Melon Chunji Radio with Super Junior's Sungmin in early 2008. "You Don't Know About Love" was her solo album on SBS's drama Working Mom in August 2008. Sunny released two songs, "Finally Now" for the MBC's interactive film Story of Wine, as well as a duet "It's Love" for the MBC's drama Heading to the Ground, including Girls' Generation's Taeyeon. Sunny appeared on MTV Korea's television music program The MTV Korea television music show The M with SS501's Kim Hyung-jun and 2AM's Im Seulong appeared on MTV Korea's internet radio show MTV Korea in 2009 and 2010. In addition to that, she and Girls' Generation member Yuri appeared on NBC's variety show Invincible Youth. A journey of a group of South Korean celebrities brought together to work and experience rural life was chronicled on the reality show. Sunny performed "Your Doll" on SBS's "Oh!" in March 2010. My Lady album — it was her first entry to the Gaon Digital Chart, ranked number 88. She continued to be active in KBS2's Invincible Youth 2 throughout 2011 and 2012. The show's producer praised her as someone with "intelligence," "high adaptability," and the ability to make other cast members work together.

She was first introduced to voice-over in January 2012 in the Korean-dubbed version of animated film The Outback, bringing her first appearance in the field of voice-over. Miranda, a koala character, was recorded on the radio. Sunny found the recording process to be frustrating, saying that Miranda was such a "charismatic" and "strong" character that it was impossible to say "with just [her] voice" because "it would have been a different story if [she] was reporting the incidents." However, she was able to "grasp the role" with the help of the producer. Sunny became a host for SBS MTV's television show Music Island in March 2012. She performed two duets throughout the year, including Brown Eyed Girls' member Miryo's "I Love You, I Love You," the first one is titled "I Love You," while the other one, "I Love You," is subtitled "I Love You," from SBS' To The Beautiful You. According to Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 chart, the songs debuted at number 56 and 25 on the Gaon Digital Chart, and at number 51 and 16 on Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 chart, respectively.

Sunny was cast in her first musical, Catch Me If You Can, based on the true story and life of a con man named Frank Abagnale from 2012 to 2013. The tale was made popular by the 2002 film of the same name. Brenda, the male lead's girlfriend, was played by her. Her results have received lauded praise. Sunny's ability to comprehend the character was praised by Shin Yeong-seon of The Chosun Ilbo, who praised Brenda's "exaggerated cuteness and flippant acting" as a result of her well-portrayal of Brenda's "exaggerated cuteness and flippant behavior. Sunny found that the most appealing part of dubbing is the ability to go back to her childhood. Sunny was cast in her second musical, Singin' in the Rain, based on the 1952 film of the same name. Sunny played Kathy Selden, an aspiring actress. "First Kiss," Hwang Sung Je's Project Super Hero collection's newest artist, was released in November 2014.

She appeared on SBS' reality show Roommate between 2014 and 2015. A group of celebrities appeared on the program together, with the house as well as household chores. Sunny hosted the MBC radio show's FM Date during the same period. She contributed her own self-written logo for the show and also received the "Rookie Radio DJ Award" at the year-end MBC Entertainment Awards. Sunny appeared on the main cast of the JTBC variety show Cheonhajangsa (), a display showcasing various traditional markets, beginning in June 2016.
