Chauhan was inspired by her mother, a homemaker, to pursue a career in music. She also has a younger sister. Chauhan began performing at youth and local gatherings and was eventually encouraged by her father's relatives to take singing seriously. "Regular riyaaz" was one of her "regular riyaaz" when she was on live shows and practiced herself with "regular riyaaz" by listening to cassettes and CDs of famous numbers at that time.

She obtained her degree from Greenway Modern School and continued to live with her family members in Dilshad Garden, Delhi. She dropped out of college to work in the music industry right after schooling. "I resigned because I didn't feel like learning," she said. I made the decision to pursue my dream as a musician, and I don't regret it one bit."

When actress Tabassum discovered her, she made her perform live on her show Tabassum Hit Parade and asked her family to relocate to Mumbai. In addition, she released Aira Gaira Nathu Khaira, her first solo album, which was later released as a children's album. Chauhan then realized her "limits" and began classical singing lessons in Gautam Mukherjee. She spent the next two years as a background vocalist.

Chauhan consulted singer Sonu Nigam, who recommended her to Sandeep Chowta. Chowta was working as the music director for Ram Gopal Varma's film Mast (1999). Chauhan was hired within two weeks to lend her voice for the film's song, where she appeared on "Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi" and "Suna Tha" on the title track. She received the RD Burman award at the Annual Filmfare awards for the song "Ruki Ruki Si" and was nominated for Female Playback Singer at the same time. Dahek and Bade Dilwala were two films screened by the year's end of the year.

Chauhan's second breakthrough came in 2000, when she collaborated with composer-singer Anu Malik on the song "Mehboob Mere" from Fiza, which was picturised on Sushmita Sen. She said the track that came to her the "most naturally" as the recording of the song was completed in 15 minutes. Chauhan received another award for Best Female Playback Singer for his film "Mehboob Mere." She was also seen in Shankar's delightfully flavoured "Bumbro" from Mission Kashmir, which was promoted from being a "background song" to a "frontground" in terms of "its beauty." When he roped Chauhan to sing for Preity Zinta, the film's producer, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, wanted an innocent voice for the song. "Chauhan may come off as childish," Chopra says. She sang the song with the "lightly broken voice."

Chauhan appeared in four songs from Ajnabee's album in 2001. "Mehbooba Mehbooba" with her nabee "Meri Zindagi Mein Ajnabee" became "simple," Mandeep Bhara of PlanetBollywood described her rendition of Adnan Sami-duet "Mehbooba" as effortless, "Sunidhi Chauhan adds pure joy to the song, leaving Kumar Sanu's Renabee" screaming for attention Both the songs were extremely popular, and they showcased Chauhan's versatility. "Meri Zindagi Mein Ajnabee" was her first romantic song. As she "fought" with the designers to sell the songs, she credited Malik for her "evolution" because she was "accepted in normal heroines romantic numbers." Milind Sagar's "Ek Baar Pyar" became her first appearance on "Ek Baar Pyar" for Anand Raj Anand and "Yeh Kaisa Ehsa Hai"; both from Ehsaas: The Feeling (2001) and a duet with Nigam. In addition,, she was seen in "Malik's Yaadein"; "Alaap," "Jab Dil Miley," and "Yaad Aati Hain" were widely praised.

Chauhan appeared in four films with Malik during the 2002 film festival. Aside from the title track, she performed three other songs, including "Maine To Khai Kasam," "More Sawariya," and "Ya Habibi" for the film Awara Paagu Deewana. For the first time during the year, she collaborated with Ismail Darbar for the first time and debuted "Ai Ajnabi" from Deewangee, which she referred to as her most difficult song. Chauhan was hired by M.M. and appeared on the soundtrack album of Himesh Reshammiya's film Humraaz. "Lake of Life," Kreem for Sur's life, where she performed "Aa Bhi Ja" and "Dil Mein Jaagi Dhadkan Aise"; something she described as "hummable" and not like her "usual style." "Chauhan's matured interpretation surprises in the second half of "Aa Bhi Ja" include a number of tracks, according to critic Priyanka Bhattacharya, who also said that the other track is "equally good."

Chauhan appeared on screen in 2003 with Ram Gopal Varma-directed Bhoot, where she appeared in Salim–Sulaiman's promotional music video "Bhoot Main" (2010). According to Malik, he roped in Chauhan to perform in two songs of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, since "Chauhan came in for the passion because [he] knows [him] in such songs." She later collaborated with him on the Munna Bhai M.B.S.'s "Dekh Le." She worked with Sandesh Shandilya for Chameli in 2004. Chameli was a key album in Chauhan's career as she performed all tracks for the album, out of which Chauhan received the most acclaim for his songs "Bhaage Re Mann" and "Sajna Ve Sajna." Although she selected the former as her "personal favorite" song in her career, her more octave "carefree delivery" of the former was lauded by the critics.

Chauhan received her third Filmfare Award for her performance "Dhoom Machaale" from Dhoom (2004), which was a critical and commercial hit. Chauhan also performed four tracks for Garv, a Sajid-Wajid album that was created by Sajid–Wajid. However, music critics referred to her as "stereotyped" and said that "all her songs sound similar." In addition, Garv's "Saiyan" is "no different" from A.R.'s A.R. version. The word "Saiyan" of Nayak was composed by Rahman (2001). "Aisa Jadoo" from Khakee was one of the year's best dance numbers, followed by "Ishq Kabhi Na" and Musafir's "Saaki." When recording the song "Aisa Jadoo" Sampath allegedly begged Chauhan to stand two feet away from the microphone, "equipment couldn't cope with her pumped-up voice throw." "Chauhan's husky vocals do complete justice to "Ishq Kabhi Na" by adding just the right amount of sauciness and oomph, as Verma wrote.

Chauhan's debut with composer Shantanu Moitra in 2005, as she performed "Aao Nee Kudiyon" for 712 Phere and "Kaisi Paheli Zindagani" for Parineeeta. Sahaya Ranjit of India Today called her voice a "westernized edge" and a "sensuous texture" with a jazz influence in her interpretation. Apart from recording the Rajasthani folk'influenced "Phir Raat Kati" in Paheli, alongside Sukhwinder Singh, she was seen playing "Jadoo" from Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav. She appeared in Vishal-Shekhar's composition, "Right Here Right Now," from Bluffmaster throughout the year. She appeared in several other capacities, including Dus (2005) and Shabd (2005), with Vishal-Shekhar. She appeared in "Chahaton Ka Silsila"—duet with Kumar Sanu, "Khoya"—duet with Sonu Nigam and "Sholon Si"—duet with Vishal Dadlani from Shabd. Chauhan received two more Filmfare award nominations for her interpretation of the song "Deedar De" from Dus and "Kaisi Pagani" of Parineeta. Sonu Nigam is said to have chosen her as the most popular voice of 2005 for her interpretation of those songs.

Chauhan was given her first filmfare award for her interpretation of Omkara's song "Beedi Jalaile" (2006). Bipasha Basu, who was in the song, said: "Sunidhi is a goddess." Her singing is so convincing. She gave my dancing a new sense of meaning. "Soniye" from Aksar and "Aashiqui Main" 36 China Town received two more nominations during the year. She appeared in ten other films apart from the former. "Keh Do Naa" and "Meethi Meethi Baataan" from Aap Ki Khatir, as well as "Ishq Kiya" and "Let's Rock" by Anthony Kaun Hai, are among Aap Ki Khatir's "Meeh Do Naa" and "Meethi Meethi Baataan" and "Let's Rock" by Anthony Kaun Hai's The critics were moderately acknowledged. Chauhan and KK performed her third screen appearance with Bas Ek Pal's "Dheemey Dheemey" in the promotional song "Dheemey Dheemey." For the film, she appeared on two other tracks, "Ashq Bhi" and "Hai Ishq Ye Kya Ek Khata," where all the songs were critically acclaimed. "Sunidhi Chauhan and KK have sung brilliantly throughout the album," Komal Nahta said. They have redesigned their look to capture the essence and emotion of every song.

The music critics lauded Chauhan's year-long friendship with Pritam. Her interpretation of "Tere Bin," "Aa Kushi Se Khud Kushi Karle," and "Afreen" in Opera style was well received. In addition, their role in Dhoom 2's "Crazy Kiya Re" was highly praised, but Gangster's "Lamha Lamha" was described as a "romantic irritant" song by Rediff.com. She appeared in her first duet with Shreya Ghoshal this year, but they have performed in multi-singer songs together, as well as "Imaan Ka Asar" from Dor from Salim–Sulaiman. Chauhan was consulted on Jatin-Lalit's remixed track "Yeh Mera Dil," apart from delivering two soft tracks, "Mere Haath Mein" and "Dekho Na" for Jatin–Lalit's production. "The remarkably positive Sunidhi Chauhan seems to be aware of inevitable comparisons to Asha Bhosle's version of the same," Rediff.com notes. Some people found her voice more huskier than it needed, while others praised her vocals. However, she did agree that if the song had been performed on a higher note, it would have been much more effective." Besides, she also performed the English language "Reach Out" at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Asian Games at Doha.

Chauhan lent her voice to Madhuri Dixit in her comeback film Aaja Nachle in 2007, where she sang "Soniye Mil Ja" alongside Sukhwinder Singh and "Koi Patthar Se Naa Maare" alongside Nigam and Ghoshal, apart from the title track. Despite providing the title track for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's composed Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Chauhan lent her voice for Shantanu Moitra in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, where she performed "Hum To Aise Hain" with Swanand Kirkire and Pranab Biswas lending support vocals. "The two-sister song works, from moustache-and-cow similes to paan spits to a stunning 3–2–7–2 count, with female vocalists doing the upbeat words justice," Raja Sen wrote in a Rediff.com article. However, he found "Kachachach Kaliyaan" from the same film less appealing due to the song's "poor remix background," but Chauhan, Ghoshal, KK, and Nigam were all applauded for the song's "required vivability." In addition, she performed "Pyaar Ki Yeh Kahani" and "Sajna Vain Vaari" from Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., which culminated in another Filmfare nomination along with "Aaja Nachle" in addition.

Chauhan received her 11th Filmfare Award for her work as Salim–Sulaiman's composition, "Dance Pe Chance," from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008). Chauhan performed "Lucky Boy" from Vishal-Shekhar's Bachna Ae Haseeno's Bachna Ae Haseeno's Bachna Ae Haseeno's Bachna Ae Haseeno, "Mujh Pe Jadoo" and its "High-on-English lyrics" version, which were both highly praised for its emphasis on vocals and composition, as well as providing vocals for "Dekho Nashe "Desi Girl" from Dostana, the year's second, was a commercial success. She later worked with Vishal Bhardwaj for U Me Aur Hum, where she appeared on both "Phatte" and "Saiyaan" along with Adnan Sami. They called the former a "situational number that does not impress much" in a Sify study. Chauhan's success with the Vishal Bhardwaj-composed "Raat Ke Dhai Baje" from Kaminey earned critical attention during the year, particularly because Chauhan and co-singer Rekha Bhardwaj's "seamless" transition of alternating voices from Chauhan and co-singer Rekha Bhardwaj received critical recognition during the year. Chauhan, as well as "Gazab" from Aa Dekhen Zara, worked with Pritam in Dil Bole Hadippa! For De Dana Dana Dan, he performed "Hotty Naughty" on the club bandwagon.
