She began her acting career in Columbus, Ohio, and Hong Kong before beginning her career as an investment bank analyst and author.

She has worked on ER, Minority Report, The West Wing, Boston Military, Bones, Nip/Tuck, Hancock, and Commander in Chief.

In Saints Row IV, Yerema, Cali's Adventure, Arcee in Transformers: Prime and Mera in Justice League Throne of Atlantis, Prime and Mera.

Education and acting career

She graduated from Harvard University in 1993 and is a Fulbright scholar in the United States. She spent a few years as an investment-banking analyst for Morgan Stanley following graduation. Montano resigned and went backpacking through Africa after realizing that investment banking wasn't something she was passionate about, before realizing she wanted to work professionally.

Montano has played a variety of roles, both live-action and voice-over. She is an expert at using many accents, including Chinese, Filipino, British, Southern, Thai, Vietnamese, Eastern European, and Japanese. Pudding appeared in the 1999 music-rhythm game, Space Channel 5, for her first voice acting work. Duvata Mahal, the nurse, was her first major acting role on the television show ER for three seasons.

Sumalee Montano won acclaim in 2021 for her role as Inoue Sato in the Peacock TV series The Lost Symbol. She appeared in the 2021 animated Disney film The Ghost and Molly McGee, starring Sharon McGee, the titular character's mother, and Grandma Nin.
