Sue Monk Kidd (born August 12, 1948) is a writer from Sylvester, Georgia, best known for her 2001 novel The Secret Life of Bees.

Early life and education

Kidd was born in Sylvester, Georgia, and attended local schools. She graduated from Texas Christian University with a B.S. in nursing in 1970. She worked in her 20s as a Registered Nurse and college nursing instructor at the Medical College of Georgia.

She was influenced in her 20s by the writings of Thomas Merton to explore her inner life. In her 30s, she took writing courses at Emory University and Anderson College in South Carolina, now Anderson University, as well as studying at Sewanee, Bread Loaf, and other writers' conferences.

Kidd is married to Sanford "Sandy" Kidd. The couple have two children, Bob and Ann. She has lived in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Florida, and currently resides in North Carolina.

In Guideposts and reprinted in Reader's Digest, she got her first writing job when an personal essay she wrote for a writing class was published. She went on to become a contributing editor at Guideposts.

Her first three books were spiritual memoirs describing her conversion from traditional Christianity to feminist theology, with the latter telling the story of her conversion from traditional Christianity to feminist theology. God's Joyful Surprise: Discovering Yourself Loved (Harper SanFrancisco, 1988) is a magazine published in the United States, and accepting one is adored as one is. When the Heart Waits: Spiritual Direction for Life's Sacred Questions (Harper SanFrancisco, 1990) shares of her traumatic midlife crisis. The Dance of the Dissident Daughter: A Woman's Journey from Christian Tradition to the Sacred Feminine (Harper SanFrancisco, 1996) delved into women's spirituality.

The Secret Life of Bees (2002), her first book, set during the 1964 American civil rights movement, narrating the tale of a black woman who went from home to live with a black woman who now works as a beekeeper and honey maker with several of her sisters. It has been adapted as an award-winning play in New York and debuted off Broadway at the Atlantic Theater. Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo starred in the book, which was also converted as a movie of the same name by Fox Searchlight, starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo. At the 35th annual awards ceremony, the Secret Life of Bees film received two People's Choice Awards, including Best Movie Drama and Best Independent Film.

The Mermaid Chair (2005), she's second book, received the 2005 Quill Award for General Fiction. The tale revolves around a woman who returns home to an island off the coast of South Carolina and becomes attracted to a Benedictine monk who is just a few months away from taking his final vows. The name refers to a chair in his monastery carved with mermaids dedicated to a female saint who is said to have been a mermaid before her conversion and who is patroness of the island. It was based on a Lifetime film of the same name in 2006. Kim Bassinger and Bruce Greenwood appeared in the film.

Guideposts Books published Firstlight, a collection of Kidd's early writings, in hardcover in 2006; Penguin also published it in paperback.

Kidd and Taylor co-authored a book entitled Traveling with Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story after traveling with Ann Kidd Taylor to sacred places in Greece, Turkey, and France. It was published in several languages and appeared on numerous bestseller lists, including the New York Times list, in 2009.

The Invention of Wings, Sarah Grimké's fourth-century feminist and women's rights pioneer, set during the antebellum years and based on her mother's civil rights pioneer, Sarah Grimké. The novel debuted at No. 1 in the United States. On The New York Times Best Seller list, number 1 was first chosen for Oprah's Book Club 2.0. Kidd appeared in an interview with Oprah on OWN's Super Soul Sunday show in April.

The book of Longings by Kidd was released on April 21, 2020. It tells the tale of Ana, an educated woman who marries Jesus Christ. Her privileged life has changed dramatically, and she is often left alone as Jesus' ministry begins. "It's an enriching and challenging read," D. G.
