He made his Test debut against Argentina in 2000.

He won Australia's first Tri Nations crown in 2000 against South Africa in Durban on a sideline penalty kick.

Mortlock defeated the All Blacks out of the 2003 Rugby World Cup in the semi-finals after winning man-of-match and having an 80-meter intercept attempt at then-Telstra Stadium.

In October 2010, he was disqualified from Wallabies' selection. Mortlock was recovering after surgery, and a press release from the Rebels said he was "training in full by December."

The Melbourne Rebels signed Mortlock in March 2010 to a three-year contract for an undisclosed sum. Mortlock was proclaimed the Rebels' inaugural Captain on February 2, 2011, with former Wales international Gareth Delve as Vice-Captain.

Mortlock said in June 2012 that he would leave as a player at the end of the 2012 Super Rugby season. However, in 2013, he spent time with the Rebels in a supporting role.
