Stephen Ferrone (born 25 April 1950) is an English drummer who appeared in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from 1994 to 2017, replacing original drummer Stan Lynch and as part of the Average White Band's "classic lineup" from the 1970s.

Ferrone has performed and appeared with George Harrison, Duran Duran, Stephanie Nicks, Laura Pausini, Slash, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, Bee Gees, Scritti Politti, Al Jarreau, and Johnny Cash.

Musical career

Ferrone appeared on their 1975 album Riddle of the Sphinx. He then started playing with Brian Auger's band Oblivion Express, which had previously featured drummer Robbie McIntosh.

McIntosh joined Average White Band after being disseminated as a result of a heroin overdose. Ferrone was invited to join AWB as a member and stayed with them for the next eight years, recording and playing concert tours to sell several hit songs before AWB's dismissal in 1982.

Since appearing on Chaka Khan's 1978 debut album, he went on to perform on the majority of her subsequent albums, including "Naughty" with former AWB band member Hamish Stuart. Ferrone first joined the Saturday Night Live house band in 1985 and was on display from 1985 to 1986. He appeared on Duran Duran Duran Duran's Notorious, Duran Duran Duran, and Thank You albums as session drummers. Duran Duran Duran Duran Duran also traveled for Notorious on the Strange Behaviour Tour. Eric Clapton performed, appeared, and recorded with him from 1986 to 1992. He appeared at Duran Duran Duran's drums at Abbey Road Studios in London during the George Harrison tour and sang "Ordinary World." Ferrone played drums on the George Harrison tour in Japan, including three nights at the Tokyo Dome.

During pre-production of the band's album Nine Lives, Ferrone was substituted for Joey Kramer of Aerosmith, though Kramer was still mourning the loss of his father.

When Ferrone and the Heartbreakers appeared as part of George Harrison's Hara and the Hijack band at Royal Albert Hall, he met guitarist Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. After the departure of original drummer Stan Lynch in 1994, he became the band's full-time drummer. Tom Petty's second solo outing Wildflowers was Ferrone's first album with the band. On February 28, 1995, he saw his first live appearance as a member of the Heartbreakers in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ferrone was raving over his time with the Heartbreakers, saying that "everyone should have an experience like The Heartbreakers in their musical life: ingenuity, passion, honesty, and a lot of fun."

Ferrone founded Drumroll Studios in Burbank, California, with financial advisor Alan Arora and producer John Jones' assistance and technical assistance, with whom he had worked since Duran Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" in 1992. They were joined later by guitarist and producer Steve Postell. They recorded and produced albums and tracks for a number of musical styles, as well as film and TV shows.

In 2003, Ferrone recorded It Up: Steve Ferrone and Friends Live at La Ve Lee.

On his self-titled debut album by The Black and White Years, produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads, he performed drums in 2007.

Ferrone appeared on Slash's eponymous first solo album in 2010 and joined the Italian band Pooh. He has also collaborated with composer and composer Eric Alexandrakis, guitarist and composer Warren Cuccuculo, and singer and songwriter Anthony J. Resta on a joint project. In a Modern Drummer news release, Alexandrakis said, "The four of us decided to form a scoring group to focus on television themes, film, and advertising." He was revealed as a drummer for Dire Straits Legacy in August 2018 ahead of their first US tour, which included ten dates.

Ferrone formed The Straits, a band made up of Dire Straits alumni, Alan Clark and Phil Palmer in 2011. Mickey Feat on bass, Chris White on saxophone, Jaimie Squire on keyboards and vocals, and Terrence Reiss on vocals and guitar.

Ferrone reunited with his AWB bandmates Malcolm "Molly" Duncan and Hamish Stuart in July 2015 to form The 360 Band. This is basically one half of the Average White Band collection. They released an album titled Three Sixty in 2017 and have been performing live alongside supporting musicians.

Ferrone appeared in the house band at a Porsche 70th anniversary celebration in 2018, as well as Ian Astbury, Dhani Harrison, and Weezer's Brian Bell.

Ferrone's studio album Calafrio's session drums were recorded in 2019.

Ferrone was inducted into the Brighton Music Walk of Fame in his hometown of Brighton, England, on July 10th.

Ferrone would be a member of John Mayer's Sob Rock Tour on February 1, 2022.
