Stephen Clark Bullock (born April 11, 1966) is an American politician, lawyer, and former scholar who currently serves as Montana's 24th and current Governor since 2013.

He is a member of the Democratic Party. Bullock, a native of Missoula, Montana, graduated from Claremont McKenna College and Columbia Law School.

He began his career as an outside consultant to Montana's Secretary of State before becoming the Executive Assistant Attorney General and acting Chief Deputy Attorney General of Montana.

Bullock began working as an advocate for Steptoe & Johnson.

He was an adjunct professor at the George Washington University Law School before starting his own law practice after returning to Montana.

Bullock was elected Attorney General of Montana in 2008, and he served one term from 2009 to 2013. On September 7, 2011, Bullock declared his candidacy for Governor of Montana.

In 2012, the seat was open as incumbent Governor Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat, could not run for reelection due to term limits.

Bullock won the Democratic primary with 87% of the vote, defeating Republican nominee Rick Hill in the general election with 48 percent.

Bullock regained re-election with 52% of the vote in 2016, defeating Republican nominee Greg Gianforte.Bullock chaired the National Governors Association from 2018 to 2019.

In 2020, he ran for President of the United States as a Democrat nominee.

Early life, education, and legal career

Bullock was born in Missoula, Montana, and raised in Helena, Montana's capital. He is the son of Penny Clark, a school board trustee, and Mike Bullock, a tutor and administrator. Bullock attended Helena High School, where he met his wife and graduated in 1984. When he was in grade school, his parents divorced. Bullock earned his B.A. Claremont McKenna College and his J.D. degree in Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE). Columbia Law School has awarded a degree with honors.

Bullock served as Montana Secretary of State Mike Cooney's chief legal counsel in 1996. He went on to work with the Montana Department of Justice under Attorney General Joe Mazurek, first as executive assistant attorney general and then as acting chief deputy (1997–2001). During this time, he served as legislative coordinator, overseeing the Attorney General's legislative campaigns.

In his first bid for Montana Attorney General, Mike McGrath, who went on to be elected Attorney General the following year and now serves as Chief Justice of Montana's Supreme Court, was disqualified. Bullock served as an adjunct professor at George Washington University Law School from 2001 to 2004. In 2004, he returned to Montana and worked in private practice in Helena.
