Boogie2988 Life

Steven Jay Williams (born July 24, 1974), better known as Boogie2988 or Boogie, is a YouTube celebrity best known for his YouTube rants about video games and nerd culture as a character from the movie "Francis" series.

The Francis character is based on stereotypes of nerdy video game players and is often parodies of popular video game news, reaction, and culture.

Williams based the character on his early life experiences and has stated that he dislikes the character for embodieing gamer stereotypes.

Boogie2988 videos range from silly rants to serious discussions on everyday life, such as the ethics of paid advertising on YouTube channels and his encounters with mental health.

At The Game Awards 2016, he received the Trending Gamer award.

Early life and education

Williams grew up in St. Paul, Virginia. Carl Williams (May 1, 1935 - September 2, 2001) was a coal miner, and his mother, Wanda Faye Williams (née Privett) (December 6, 1941 - October 8, 2009), was a tutor. He has two older siblings.

Williams referred to his childhood as a "sad" period in his life, due to his struggle with hunger, a lack of friends, and verbal and physical abuse from his mother. Despite this, her death in 2009, when she was in the same hospital as her mother, has been described as the saddest moment of his life. Because of his father's death from cancer, he was already depressed. Williams underwent gastric bypass surgery in August 1, 2017 due to morbid obesity.

Williams graduated from St. Paul High School in Virginia and attended University of Virginia's College at Wise, but did not graduate. He later moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where his life improved momentarily but then went back to it, and he did not leave his house for seven years while being aided by a friend. It was then that he discovered YouTube and began to make videos, which he said gave his life a meaning.

Personal life

Desiree "Dez" and his mother died shortly after his mother's death in 2009, and they moved to Arkansas to live with him. She later became known as Dez2988, adopting his numerical suffix and occasionally portraying the unintelible character of Francis' sister. Williams and Desiree married in October 2013. Desiree filed for divorce and had intended to for a while, but didn't recover from his gastric bypass surgery until he fully recovered. On February 13, 2018, the divorce was finalized. He is a theist.

Boogie became a hit on Twitter in September 2020 after reports broke out of an ongoing conflict between him and Frank Hassle, a YouTuber who started harassing him for several months after suspecting he was the source of his YouTuber's demise. The two were interviewed by Keemstar, after Hassle was seen on his way down to Boogie's home in Arkansas, where Boogie threatened to murder Hassle if he stepped on his property. Hassle, a Boogie man, wielded a GoPro, Boogie, pulled out a rifle and fired a warning shot into the air the next day. Hassle eventually left, and the whole incident was caught on camera. Soon after, a police probe was launched. The Washington County, Arkansas sheriff's department released a warrant for Boogie's arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault with a $5,000 bond on May 7, 2021. On May 12, Boogie turned himself in and was arrested in a three-and-a-half hours and released for bail. During his court session, he pleaded for "not Guilty." Boogie's lawsuit was settled on a deferred adjudication basis, according to his lawyer on March 7, 2022.

Boogie confessed to potentially taxing tax evasion in April 2019. He wrote down Magic: The Gathering cards for his channel, writes them off as a company expense, and then resells them without reporting the income on his taxes. The IRS also states that self-employment earnings over $400 must be disclosed.

Boogie made a controversial argument against his internet trolls in August 2019. "I think that there are rapists and Nazis out there who... are more redeemable than you because they're doing something they believe in."

Boogie revealed on Twitter that he was working with Palangi Studio co-founders Matt Murphy & Joe Boyajian on a new project in August 2020. Boogie talked to two guys who tried to convince him into buying a Playstation 5 before the release date was confirmed by Sony, after no further information were given. The Palangi Studio group had a vociferous protest that Boogie was clearly insinuing the co-founders to abandon the program. Boogie eventually took responsibility for the tweet and apologizing for the situation on livestream, then blaming a new panic attack.
