Stephen Weiss Career

Playing career

Weiss spent his junior years with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), compiling statistics that impressed scouts and named him one of the top-ranked skaters in the North American Central Scouting Report. Weiss scored 66 points in his rookie season, enough to qualify for the OHL First All-Rookie Team. Weiss continued to post eye-popping figures in his sophomore season, scoring 87 points and advancing to the top-five among North American skaters.

Weiss was drafted fourth overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, owing to his junior success. In 2001–2002, he returned to the Whalers, and although his point totals were down from the previous year, he still managed a respectable 70 points.

Weiss made his NHL debut during the 2001-2002 season, averaging goal and an assist during his seven-game stint. Weiss signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Panthers on April 16, 2002.

Weiss scored six goals and 15 assists in 77 games, missing five of them due to a broken toe in his first full NHL season. Weiss also appeared in the NHL YoungStars Game in Sunrise, Florida, before his home crowds determined him to win the game 8–3. Weiss' second full season was disappointing, though he was unable to adjust to head coach Mike Keenan's coaching style and was drafted to the San Antonio Rampage's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate for a ten-game stint. In November, Weiss returned to the Panthers lineup, where he remained for the remainder of the season. He missed a significant portion of the 2003-2004 season due to a sprained knee and a fractured leg, causing him to miss the remainder of the season. In 50 games this season, the Weiss scored ten goals and 19 assists.

Weiss was drafted by the Panthers to their AHL affiliate in San Antonio, where he scored 15 goals and 23 assists with the Rampage before being loaned to the Chicago Wolves for the remainder of the season as the 2004-05 NHL season was wiped out due to a labour dispute.

Weiss will enjoy his first post-season at a professional level, as the Wolves advanced to the 2005 Calder Cup Finals, where they lost to the Philadelphia Phantoms in seven games.

Weiss re-signed with the Panthers as a restricted free agent when the league returned from hibernation for the 2005-06 season. He then had one of his most frustrating seasons, missing the majority of the season due to a serious wrist injury. Weiss had 29 points in 41 games with the team. Weiss returned to the Panthers in the following season, but he missed a lot of time due to knee and shoulder injuries. During the off-season, he signed a six-year contract extension with the Panthers. Despite missing time due to the flu and shoulder injuries, Weiss, who was trying to boost his results, followed up his performance by scoring 13 goals and 29 assists in 74 games.

Head Coach Peter DeBoer, his former coach in the OHL, was seen as a breakthrough year for Weiss in the 2008–09 season. He played a career-high 78 games and had a career-high 47 assists in that year. Despite missing four games due to a groin injury, the Weiss brothers were able to recover. Weiss' campaign continued to grow in the years to come with a career-high 28 goals and 32 assists in a career-high 80 games. Weiss's production dropped to 49 points in 2010-2011, but he became a victim of repeated trade rumors throughout the year.

Weiss set a franchise record by playing in his 614th game in a Panthers jersey on February 23, 2012. He was honoured in a ceremony on February 26, 2012, ahead of his home game against the Montreal Canadiens; he scored two goals that night, including the game champion.

Weiss made his playoff debut with Florida in 2012 after 637 games without a Stanley Cup playoff appearance. In the Eastern Conference Quarter-finals, he scored three goals and two assists in the Panthers' seven-game series loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Weiss signed a five-year, $24.5 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent. With jersey number 9 reborn by Detroit in honor of Detroit legend Gordie Howe, Weiss, who had worn the number during his time in Florida, he was promoted to number 90. Weiss' first season with the Red Wings, he was limited to just 26 games during the 2013–14 season, and he did not play after December 10, following hernia surgery. The Red Wings sold out Weiss' contract for the final three years, releasing him to a free agency on June 30, 2015.
