Music career

When he was a young singer in the 1990s, Stevens adopted his stage name. "It Sure Looks Good On You," he released a single in 1994. He went on tour with the Dixie Cadillacs, a country band of five. Under the band name Calf Creek Records in June 1996, the band's name was released an album. Stevens returned to Missouri to settle down and raise his young family, first in the city of Belton, Missouri, where he started working in the city's water department and later in the city's street department, and later in road repair.

He began playing with Outlaw Junkies with Steve Koken and Robert Harmon around 2005. In 2008, he left the band to form the Tate Stevens Band, a six-man band that has toured extensively in the Midwest on weekends and vacations. In 2008, he wrote songs and released an independent album.

Stevens auditioned in Kansas City, Missouri, for season 2 of The X Factor, singing Randy Houser's "Anything Goes" with the help of judges L.A. Reid, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears, and temporary judge Louis Walsh, who was in for Simon Cowell. He was chosen to attend boot camp, where he would perform "Nobody Knows" against Willie Jones. He was chosen to be a member of the judges' houses competition in the "Over 25s" category, and L.A. Reid coached him. In front of him and guest judges Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun, he sang "Back At One" at Reid's house. Reid ultimately selected Stevens as one of his top-four picks.

On the first live show, he sang "Tough," a Craig Morgan song, and was saved by his mentor L.A. Reid. He appeared on week 2 of the live shows as "Wanted Death or Alive" and was named the top of the popular vote in the country. He appeared on "From This Moment" by Shania Twain for the second week in a row. He appeared on "I'm Already There" on week 4 live broadcast, finishing second in popular vote to Carly Rose Sonenclar; he will remain in second place during the fifth week of live broadcasts as well. Stevens went "unplugged" by Bon Jovi (for his acoustic track) and Garth Brooks' "If Tomorrow Never Comes" (chosen by the fans as his Pepsi Challenge song). His success earned him back to the top of the charts once more. Stevens appeared on "Tomorrow" by Chris Young in the show's final week and was named The X Factor's champion. The official winner's single was "Tomorrow."

Stevens was supposed to begin recording on his debut album in early 2013, but the album was expected to begin as soon as January 2, 2013. Straight after, the song's full-length music video became available online straight after. The song's music video made use of about 100 extras and focuses on a "large bonfire party." In Simi Valley, California, the music video was shot. "Power of a Love Song" was released physically and digitally on March 12, 2013. With "Holler If You're With Me" as a B-side, it was the album's official lead single to country radio. On April 23, 2013, Tate's self-titled debut album was released. The album debuted at number 18 on the Billboard 200 with 17,000 copies in its first week, and critics were enthusiastic about it.
