Early life
Stella Whitehouse was born in South Norwood, England; her family migrated from South Norwood to Essex in 1939 due to the danger of living in London during World War II. Her father took up as chief draughtsman at a steel works in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and the family migrated there. She referred to the Barrow Blitz as a small child and transitioning claustrophobic into adulthood, and needed an escape route from any situation. After spending some time in Wallasey, she was educated at Croslands Convent School. Stella attended Nottingham High School for Girls when her father worked in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, where they later moved to the Midlands. She spent her remaining summers of secondary school in Paris as an au pair before enrolling in 1954 to study English. She met John Rimington, her future husband, by chance, who she had not recognized from Nottingham.
She earned her degree in 1958 and then concentrated in archive studies at the University of Liverpool before starting as an archivist at the County Record Office in Worcester in 1959. She married John Rimington in 1963 and moved to London, where she eventually applied for a position at the India Office Library.
In 1965, her husband was given a First Secretary (Economic) for the British High Commission in New Delhi, India, and the couple sailed to India in September.
Personal life
She married John Rimington, who was still attending high school in 1963. Stella and her two children separated in 1984, with Stella retaining custody of their two children. They did not divorce because it was "a faff," and they recovered later, living together during the coherent lockdown of 2021. "It's a good recipe for marriage," Rimington said.
