Carlton Errington Grant (born 30 May 1969), also known as Spragga Benz, is a Jamaican dancehall deejay.
Personal life
Benz developed the Stay in School scheme in the late 1990s, assisting homeless students in his hometown of Franklin Town.
Carlton "Carlyle" Grant Jr., his 17-year-old son who had appeared in a younger version of Benz's character in the film Shottas, was killed by local police in Kingston, Jamaica, on August 23, 2008. Two men were arrested on a bicycle in the Kingston 8 area, and one of them opened fire on them when they approached them. The men were arrested and released fire, according to the police. Grant Jr. was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds and carrying a.45 semi-automatic pistol as they searched the area. Grant Jr. was admitted to the hospital where he had been declared dead.
Following his son's death, Benz founded the Carlisle Foundation with the intention of assisting local youth.
Career
He began his career in 1991. He was once known as "Spaghetti" (tall and slim), but Spragga was later reduced to Spragga. He grew up to L.A. Benz's sound system, and it's through this that he discovered his way into the music industry at a dubplate recording session with Buju Banton. The legendary elder DJ had planned to perform four tracks for L.A. Benz, but he only spoke out two and suggested that Spragga do the other two songs. Since he was new to recording, he freestyled a few lines of what would then be called "Love Mi Gun" or "Love Mi Gun" in honor of a well-known tune.
He soon became a hit performer for a number of companies, including Bobby Digital, and was followed by "Could a Deal" (produced by Winston Riley) and "Girls Hooray" (Steely & Clevie). A collection of well-received singles followed, many on Jack It Up (1994), his debut album. This success culminated in a record deal for Capitol Records, who released his second album, Uncommonly Smooth, which featured duets with Chevelle Franklyn ("A-1 Lover") and "Spanish Harlem" (with Ben E. King). The album didn't sell well enough for Capitol, who then cut him off for a few years in Jamaica, while also collaborating with Wyclef Jean and KRS-One. He produced "She Nuh Ready Yet" on his third album, Part (2000), and was also included on his third album, Fully Loaded. Lady Saw (on "Backshot") and Foxy Brown (on "Too Stoosh") co-produced by house music legend Todd Terry, and "Too Stoosh") appeared on this album. Benz made his film acting debut in Brooklyn, and the following year appeared in the gangster film Shottas. Thug Nature, his fourth album, was released in 2002.
Benz produced a string of duets in 2003, including Carly Simon, Kevin Lyttle, and Shannon, with the intention of breaking into the American market. In July 2007, Benz co-hosted the Urban Music Awards in New York with Foxy Brown. Benz was nominated for three awards at the first Caribbean Urban Music Awards, which were held in Jamaica in April 2008. Spragga Benz's sixth solo album Shotta Culture was released on August 31, 2010.
Chiliagon's 2019 album Top Billboard Reggae Albums topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
