Spencer Breslin Career

Acting career

Breslin was discovered by a talent scout in a New York City playground at the age of three and went on to appear in over 50 commercials for McDonald's, Life cereal, and other items. He made his television debut and was a series regular on ABC's three-episode-long 1997 first season, in which he appeared as the youngest child of Dan Aykroyd. He went on to appear on many television shows, including Law & Order, before appearing in Stephen King's Storm of the Century in 1999.

Breslin made his debut film at the age of eight by appearing in The Kid's cult fantasy comedy-drama film published in the United Kingdom as chubby, sweet, lovable, and direct 8-year-old Rusty (who plays Rusty). After a national search, director Jon Turteltaub chose Breslin over thousands of other kid actors. "Bruce [Willis] couldn't have a straight face during [Spencer's] audition, according to Turteltaub. Spencer was still giggling at how amazing and alive he was." Willis loved making a film, so Breslin enjoyed the finer things in life: "My breaks were the coolest things of all." I rode golf carts around the park. "I would ride around and just scare people." "There is nothing bratty, no spoiled about this kid at all," Turteltaub explained. When she visited him on the set, Breslin welcomed child actress Skye McCole Bartusiak, one year his junior, to his co-star.

The Young Artist Association Breslin's 200 Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Young Actor Age Ten or Under was given to Chris for his role in Disney's The Kid. He was also nominated for the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films' Best Young Actor Award in a Comedy Film, as well as the 2000 YoungStar Award for Best Young Actor in a Comedy Film, which was also named by The Hollywood Reporter. "Mr. Willis stands by as a child swipes a film out of his open palm," a film critic for The New York Times said. Spencer Breslin, Russ' tubby, cute-but-annoying almost-8-year-old self, wrote about it. "Seven-year-old Spencer Breslin knows how to deliver a line," CNN reporter Sherri Sylvester said. It's difficult to believe that "The Kid" by Disney is his first feature film. "Though Rusty was supposed to be ten in the original script, the filmmakers made him 8 so they could cast Spencer Breslin in the role, and it's not difficult to see why." "He's something else," Shirley Sealy wrote in Film Journal International of Breslin: "He's something else." And if an old pro like Bruce Willis is often taken aback by his mini co-star's natural comedic gifts and spontaneity. "Children... will have fun... by all means, especially because young Breslin... is such a charming, funny, unmannered boy," Entertainment Weekly reported. The film was a commercial success, grossing $110 million.

In the 2000 comedy film Meet the Parents, he appeared as a little boy, earning the eighth-highest worldwide gross of the year. He appeared in the Disney Channel Original Movie The Ultimate Christmas Presenter, a comedy, and received a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Performance in a TV Movie (Comedy or Drama) later this year.

In the 2002 romantic comedy-drama-fantasy film The Santa Clause 2: The Mrs. he played whiz-kid Curtis the Elf. Clause is the first of four films in which he co-starred alongside actor Tim Allen. The film was a huge financial success, grossing $173 million in gross sales, and it was the fifth-grossing holiday film ever and the 28th-highest-grossing movie of the year, grossing $29 million in the first weekend. In 2002, he appeared in television films including the 2002 Mom's on Strike as a pesky younger brother in the 2003 You Wish! and Ozzie. He has appeared in animation films, most notably as Cubby in the animated fantasy comedy comedy-drama film Return to Neverland, which was nominated for a Best Performance in a Vocal Over Role at the 24th Young Artist Awards in 2002 and Cap in the Disney animated television series Teamo Supremo. The film's worldwide box office was $109 million.

Breslin was then back on the big screen, starring Dakota Fanning and Mike Myers as a young, tumultuous brother of Fanning's in the 2003 fantasy comedy film The Cat in the Hat, which was critically panned and grossed $134 million worldwide. Alec Baldwin and director Bo Welch lauded Breslin for his "horizontal lisp," the New York sound of his voice, as well as his ability to convey "every shade of neurosis." "Spencer Breslin plays the snobnoxious, obnoxious boy," film critic Philip Morency wrote. He makes you want to shoot him." Breslin was described as "adorable" by film critic Stephen Hunter, who wrote for the Washington Post.

In the 2004 comedy drama Raising Helen, starring Kate Hudson as their aunt and guardian, Breslin played on-screen siblings with his real-life younger sister Abigail Breslin. Spencer and Abigail made a cameo as a girl at an orphanage in 2004 romantic comedy The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, in which Spencer played a prince and Abigail made a cameo as a girl at an orphanage. The film earned $122 million worldwide box office. Spencer Breslin appeared as a dim-witted 12-year-old on the short-lived CBS sitcom Center of the Universe starring John Goodman in 2004. In 2004, he appeared in the Wonderfalls episode "Lovesick Ass." When Dr. Seuss won his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004, Breslin was able to read alongside Alyson Stoner, Dylan Sprouse, and Hailey Anne Nelson.

In the 2006 The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, Abigail appeared again, in which Spencer reprised his role as Curtis the Elf. Spencer was nominated for the 2007 Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Young Ensemble Cast at the 28th Young Artist Awards for his role in the film. Breslin appeared in two other feature films, the superhero action-adventure comedy Zoom, and The Shaggy Dog (as Tim Allen's pudgy, eager to please son, who turns into a puppy) in 2006. "The occasional lump-in-the-throat moments are almost unachievable," Variety Chief Film Critic Justin Chang said. The film earned $111 million around the world.

Breslin grew up to star in 2007's offbeat teen comedy Harold, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., about a teen who begins prematurely balding at an early age. "As played by Mr. Breslin, Harold is an inspired creation, at times a fidslin Woody Allen, but others a brooding George Costanza." "Breslin nails his old soul's bunion-hobbled, stooped shuffle," Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter opined. He does a good job off Gooding. "He does a good job."

In M. Night Shyamalan's science fiction doomsday drama The Happening in 2008 starred Josh Breslin. The film's worldwide box office was $163 million.

Breslin's acting career dropped drastically after 2006, although he continued to work on a semi-regular basis.

Anthony appears in Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey, a 3-D animated educational science adventure film. Breslin was one of "The 17 Coolest 17 Year-Olds From Around the World" on MTV in 2010.

In the 2011 film Born to Race, Breslin appeared as Max. Jason was then cast in the 2012 romantic comedy film Stuck in Love. In the 2012 crime drama Perfect Sisters, Spencer appeared alongside Abigail as Cousin Derek. Breslin began working in other aspects of filmmaking, including as an executive producer on the animated version of "Really Bad Movie." In 2013, he was also writing and directing his own short films.

In the 2016 horror film Some Kind of Hate, which starred Grace Phipps and Sierra McCormick, and FrightFest, Breslin appeared as computer nerd goofball Isaac.

Breslin was co-hosting Spencer & Lara's Vomitorium weekly podcast, dedicated to "complaining about the unbearable, ineffective, and aggravating" in July 2016.
