Sofoklis Schortsanitis Life

Sofoklis Schortsanitis (born 22 June 1985) is a Greek professional basketball player for Ionikos Nikaias of the Greek Basket League.

Born in Tiko, Cameroon, to a Greek adopted step-father, Konstantinos, and Georgette, a Cameroonian mother, he plays the center position. Schortsanitis was a member of the All-EuroLeague First Team in 2011 and won the EuroLeague final in 2014 and 2011 while competing for Olympiacos and Maccabi, respectively.

He was a member of the senior Greek national team that received silver medals in the 2006 FIBA World Championship and a bronze medal in the EuroBasket 2009.

He is referred to as "Big Sofo" or "Baby Shaq" in the United States.

Early years

Schortsanitis, a native of Tiko, Cameroon, immigrated to Greece with his mother when he was quite young. Alexandros, his younger brother, is older. Schortsanitis played basketball in his hometown, Kavala, for the first time. It was there where his parents urged him to play basketball, but Schortsanitis at first was dissatisfied with the sport. But as the game progressed, he was still playing. A scout/coach discovered his gifts and took him on to the sport eventually.

Professional career

In the 2000–01 Greek League season, Schortsanitis began playing competitive basketball for Iraklis. He averaged 11.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per league game from 2002 to 2003. His results in the Italian League in 2003-04 were a disappointment; he lacked maturity and experience. He will return to Greece to play with the Greek side Aris in the 2004–05 season.

Schortsanitis was transferred to Olympiacos in 2005-06 season. He was a key player on the team that advanced to the EuroLeague quarterfinals, and his presence impressed Panagiotis Giannakis, who selected him for the Greece men's national basketball team at the end of the season.

Schortsanitis' persistent weight problems resurfaced during the next two years, to the point that he spent almost the entire 2007–08 season dealing with them. He came back to form for the 2008–09 season as well as the Olympiacos' promotion to the EuroLeague Final Four. He took another step toward consistency in the 2009-10 season, leading to the club's elimination of Juan Carlos Navarro's and Ricky Rubio's Barcelona, 86-68.

Schortsanitis, the Israeli Premier League's then-five-time EuroLeague champions, signed a two-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv on August 5, 2010. His appearances alongside Jeremy Pargo, Chuck Eidson, and Doron Perkins helped the team advance to the 2011 EuroLeague Final, where they eventually lost by a score of 78-70 to Dimitris Diamantidis Panathinaikos. Throughout the EuroLeague's 2010–11 season, Schortsanitis averaged 12 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1 assist per game, earning an All-EuroLeague First Team selection.

Schortsanitis suffered with a persistent knee injury during his career on the season, leaving him unable to participate with the national team this summer. Nevertheless, he helped Maccabi reach the EuroLeague quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Panathinaikos in the series, 3–2.

Schortsanitis, the Greek club Panathinaikos, agreed to a three-year deal worth €1.5 million euros net income on July 4, 2012. Baskonia Vitoria and Galatasaray, among others, allegedly refused to return to Greece and fulfill his desire to play for Panathinaikos. Schortsanitis will no longer play for the team after being revealed in July 2013. Panathinaikos confirmed it in July 2013.

Schortsanitis returned to Maccabi after one season in Panathinaikos, and the defending Israeli Premier League champions signed a three-year deal. The team won the EuroLeague finals in Maccabi's second season as captain, which was the first EuroLeague championship won in Schortsanitis' career. He averaged 9.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in 14.2 minutes per game of playing time in more than 29 games played in the EuroLeague this season.

Schortsanitis signed a one-year deal with Serbian club Crvena zvezda on August 2, 2015. He and Zvezda parted ways on October 28, 2015, leaving Zvezda together. He averaged 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in six games played with the club in the ABA League's 2015–16 season.

Schortsanitis joined the Greek club PAOK for the remainder of the season on November 2nd. In the European-wide 2nd-tier EuroCup's 2015–16 season, he averaged 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.

Schortsanitis, a Greek footballer, joined Apollon Patras in December 2016. However, during one of the team's workouts on December 28, he sustained a serious injury as he ruptured his Achilles tendon. He was forced to miss the entire remainder of the Greek Basket League, 2016-2017, and was thus not allowed to participate in any games with Apollon due to his injury.

Schortsanitis returned to action on October 18th and joined Aries Trikala of the Greek Basket League for the 2017-18 season. He made his debut in a 76–86 loss to Rethymno Cretan Kings on Monday, scoring 6 points and one rebound off the bench.

Schortsanitis signed with Ionikos Nikaias for the Greek Basket League 2019-20 season on July 24, 2019.

After being originally selected in the 2nd round (34th overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft, Schortsanitis drew attention from the Los Angeles Clippers in the summer of 2006; however, he did not make the leap to the NBA at the time; however, because he was still under control with Olympiacos at the time, he did not make the switch to the NBA. In 2010, his Olympiacos contract came to an end, and he signed the Clippers' NBA Summer League with a view to joining the team; this time, the Clippers were dissatisfied, and he refused to find a deal with the team. In a sign-and-trade contract for Willie Green, the Los Angeles Clippers traded Schortsanitis' draft rights to the Atlanta Hawks on July 30.

In exchange for Thabo Sefolosha, the right to Georgios Printezis, and cash considerations, his draft rights were transferred to the Oklahoma City Thunder on July 15, 2014.

Schortsanitis resigned on December 10, 2020, according to the author. So far, making him one of the 11 players from the 2003 NBA Draft Class to have never played in the NBA.

National team career

Schortsanitis was selected to represent the Under-16 national team in 2001 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship, the Under-16 national team that captured a bronze medal at the 2002 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, and the Under-19 national team that captured a bronze medal at the 2003 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. Schortsanitis was part of the squad that won the gold medal at the 2002 Albert Schweitzer Tournament, where he was also named MVP of the tournament.

Schortsanitis' introduction to being on the Greece men's national basketball team sparked his interest in the 2006 FIBA World Championships, which was held in Japan. After Greece defeated Team USA, 101–95, in the semifinals, he helped them win the silver medal. In 17 minutes, Schortsanitis scored 14 points in a game. He also competed with Greece at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Greece.

Schortsanitis' result in Greece's bronze medal game against Slovenia, which was held in Poland, was decisive in the tournament's bronze medal game against Slovenia, with him scoring 23 points on a 78% field goal shooting percentage, blocking two shots, and resulting in 12 fouls.
