Personal life
Sirusho married Levon Kocharyan, the son of Armenia's second president Robert Kocharyan, on June 6, 2009. Robert, their first son, was born in 2014. In May 2016, they welcomed Michael, their second son. They're expecting their third child now, who they've dubbed Zabelle.
Life and career
Sirusho was born in Yerevan, Soviet Armenia, on January 7, 1987, to actress and director Hrachya Harutyan and Syuzan Margaryan, one of Armenia's most popular singers in the 1980s-1990s. Sirusho received her first award at the Armenian National Music Awards for her performance of "Lusabats," an Armenian folk song written in the early 20th century by Komitas. Sirusho began writing her own music and lyrics in Armenian and English at the age of seven. At the age of nine, she received another award at the Young Talent Contest for one of her own creations. At the age of 13, she released Sirusho, her first studio album. In 2004, Sirusho graduated from Yerevan's Khachik Dashtents School #114. She then studied piano at Sayat-Nova Music School, and graduated Yerevan State University with an international relations degree.
Although Sirusho was predominantly performing soul and pop, she decided to work on an album of Armenian folk songs by gusan titled Sheram, which was released in 2005. The album also had the single "Shorora," which was also well received. Sheram was named Best Album of the Year at the Armenian National Music Awards in 2005. Sirusho has also received the "Best Female Artist of the Year" award.
Varduhi Vardanyan, a well-known Armenian singer, died in 2006. Varduhi has been a close friend of Sirusho's since childhood. Sirusho dedicated "Mez Vochinch Chi Bazhani" ("Nothing Will Separate Us"), which is included in Sirusho's album "Now"), to Varduhi after her death.
Sirusho received the Grand Prize for Best Female Artist of the Year at the Annual Armenian-Russian Diaspora Music Awards in Moscow, Russia, in 2006. Sirusho was chosen to represent Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. In "Qele Qele," which was co-produced by Canadian Armenian composer DerHova, she appeared on "Qele Qele." On May 20th, the song reached the first semi-finals and advanced to the final, which took place in Belgrade on May 24, 2008. Sirusho earned 199 points in the fourth round, but the only Armenian participant to receive the most number of 12 points is still standing. The four winners of the Marcel Bezençon Award 2008 were announced and prizes were given out at the official after-party following the final. They were given a new Fan Award by Swedish website Gylleneskor.com. Readers of the site had the opportunity to vote for their favorite 2008 artist. Sirusho's album "Erotas" (Sudden Love) is an up-tempo dance song with heavy traditional Greek laiko influence sung entirely in Greek on April 1, 2009. It was composed by singer Hayko and written by Natalia Germanou. At the Tashir Armenian Awards ceremony in April 2009, Sirusho performed the song live. On the Armenian Singles Chart, Erotas continued to be the number one hit.
Sirusho produced a song dedicated to peace in 2009 along with Eurovision 2008; Boaz Mauda and Jelena Tomasevic, representing Israel and Serbia respectively, appeared in Israel and Serbia respectively. In May, "Time to Pray" was released; the President of Israel, Shimon Peres, wrote the song.
At the Armenian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, Sirusho performed her latest song Havatum em (I Believe). Sirusho wrote the lyrics and the music. Havatum em, Sirusho's fourth official studio album, was released in mid-2010, as well as new singles. On iTunes, the first single from Sirusho's upcoming studio album, "I Like It," was released in September 2011. On November 11, the film was released. Sirusho released the new single "PreGomesh," a dance track co-written by her and Avet Barseghyan, on December 10, 2012. The song was influenced by an Armenian folk song "Lorva Gutanerg," which Komitas preserved. The film is resurrecting Armenian traditions and presenting them in a fresh way. In the same month, Russian singer Grigory Leps released his latest album, which features Sirusho's song "удо има."
In October 2013, Sirusho and Sakis Rouvas announced that they were going to record and release a duet song "See" together. At World Music Awards in 2014, she was nominated for Best Armenian Singer, The Best Armenian Song, and The Best Armenian Music Video. Sirusho presented the re-release of "Tariner" (Armenian: YEARS) with compatriot Harout Pamboukjian, blending traditions from different generations. On November 9, Sirusho's first solo performance at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, United States, took place.
Sirusho's latest song, "Where Were You") was released in 2015 in honor of the Armenian Genocide's 100th anniversary. Both versions of the song were released in Armenian and English, and both versions were available on iTunes. A video for the song has also been posted.
Sirusho released a new single "Mi Togh Indz Menak" (Do released Leave Me Alone) as well as its music video in January 2016. In August 2016, she performed live at Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany, and was named as the Best Armenian Female Act at Daf BAMA Music Awards and performed Qele Qele (Remix version). Sirusho revealed the forthcoming launch of Armat (Root), a tribute to Armenian history, in the same month. Together with Armenian-American singer, songwriter Sebu Simonian of the Capital Cities band, Sirusho released a new summer hit song "Vuy Aman." She appeared at the opening ceremony of the 2019 CONIFA European Football Cup in the de facto Republic of Artsakh. Sirusho's collaboration single "Stay" starring Norwegian singer Alexander Rybak, who won the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in 2021, was released in 2021.
Sirusho is involved in the establishment of a foundation named after Armenian eminent and beloved artist Hayko in 2022. Hayko Hakobyan's foundation aims to save and display Hayko's musical heritage. Sirusho has appeared and performed at the concert dedicated to Hayko's 49th anniversary in August 2022.
