Simon Pagenaud Life

Simon Pagenaud (born 18 May 1984) is a French professional racing driver.

He currently drives the #22 Chevrolet for Team Penske in the IndyCar Series.

After a successful career in sports car racing that saw him taking the top class championship title in the 2010 American Le Mans Series, he moved to Formula Racing in the Indycar Series where he became the 2016 IndyCar champion and the 2019 Indianapolis 500 winner, becoming the first French driver to win the Indianapolis 500 since Gaston Chevrolet in 1920 and the first polesitter to have won the race since Helio Castroneves in 2009.

Early years

Born in Montmorillon, Pagenaud first worked at age 14 in the family's supermarket, eventually managing the video game department. After he attended business school, he returned to the supermarket. Simon Pagenaud Career

Career

Pagenaud appeared in French Formula Renault in 2002 and 2003, and in 2002 and 2004 in Formula Renault Eurocup. In 2005, he made his way to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, where he finished 16th. He went to the United States and won the Champ Car Atlantic with Team Australia in his rookie season, just a few points over Graham Rahal.

Pagenaud won US$2 million to apply for a ride in Champ Car in 2007. Pagenaud and Team Australia announced on February 13, 2007, that he would remain with the team, as well as the Champ Car program. In a very consistent debut season, Pagenaud placed 8th in the points standings, with three consecutive fourth-place finishes in the Canadian rounds of the championship.

Pagenaud in 2008 joined the De Ferran Motorsports Acura ARX-01b LMP2 after the demise of the Champ Car World Series, and Gil de Ferran, a former CART champion, moved to the American Le Mans Series co-driving the De Ferran Motorsports Acura ARX-01b LMP2 in co-driving the Champ Car World Series. In the driver's standings, he ranked 14th in the world's top 10.

Pagenaud and de Ferran Motorsports took the next step forward in 2009, with the pair finishing second in the American Le Mans Series LMP1 class, only 17 points behind champions Highcroft Racing's David Brabham and Scott Sharp. The ARX-01 won by three races and three pole positions, taking the fastest lap of the ALMS weekend six times.

Pagenaud drove in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, a Peugeot FAP 908 from 2009, while the privateer Pescarolo Sport team took the lead in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in LMP1. The crew did not finish the race, completing 210 laps. David Brabham, who was driving in the Peugeot Sport Total No. 1, won the competition. Alexander Wurz and Marc Gené, former Formula One racers, are among 9 FAP 908's along with former Formula One stars Alexander Wurz and Marc Gené.

Pagenaud took over the Patrón Highcroft racing team in LMP1, replacing Scott Sharp who co-drives with Brabham after Sharp vacated the position to move to the ALMS GT2 class with his own Ferrari team in the 2010 ALMS class. The Pagenaud and Brabham team is leading the LMP1 class with three victories and 91 points through four rounds of the 2010 ALMS series.

In the 2010 edition of the Peugeot FAP 908 No. 1, Pagenaud was given a seat driving for the Peugeot factory team in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Pedro Lamy and Sébastien Bourdais appear on the 3rd of this series.

Although the No. 1 is the top of the charts, the No. 10 is still No. 1. When a suspension mount sheared from the car's tub, 3 Peugeot started from pole, it pulled it early before nightfall. With just hours remaining in the race, Anthony Davidson/Gene/Wurz's no.1 Peugeot car reclaimed second position, only with two hours to go in second, having regained the 24 Hours of Le Mans title that it had coveted for five years prior to Peugeot's 2009 victory.

Pagenaud found himself competing against his Highcroft Racing team, which traveled to Le Mans for the first time in history. Highcroft maintained second place throughout most of the season, with Brabham driving the Acura in LMP2 alongside Marino Franchitti and Marco Werner, until a cooling issue sidelined the car for a large portion of the race's final four hours.

On May 10, he won the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis. This was the first time his father had seen him racing at the stadium.

In 2015, Pagenaud moved from Schmidt Peterson Motorsports to Team Penske. Pagenaud won the 2015 Indianapolis 500, leading with less than 30 laps to go and the majority of the race in a 3-way match between Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan. Pagenaud was forced to drop by the field and finished 10th, while teammate Juan Pablo Montoya took the race. Pagenaud didn't win a race in 2015, but he renewed his contract with TEAM Penske in 2016.

Pagenaud got off to the best start of his IndyCar career, with five consecutive podium appearances, including three victories in a row. Pagenaud and his coworker Will Power became the top contenders for the championship as the season progressed. Pagenaud won his first IndyCar Series championship victory in the country's 50th year of racing, with a strong showing at the end of the season. He ended the year with five race victories and a total of eight podiums.

Pagenaud will winless in 2018. Pagenaud won the Grand Prix of Indianapolis and would also win the 2019 Indianapolis 500 from pole position. Pagenaud took the championship lead from Team Penske's Josef Newgarden, but Newgarden would retake the championship lead one race later in Detroit. At the 2019 Iowa 300, Pagenaud will win pole and the win, while Newgarden would take pole and the trophy. Pagenaud is currently 3rd in the points standings, one point behind Andretti Autosport driver Alexander Rossi and 34 points behind points leader Newgarden.

Pagenaud was accused of intentionally crash into leading driver Lando Norris, resulting in him being charged with bad sportsmanship during the 2020 iRacing virtual Indy 500 event.

In the first race of the 2020 season at Texas Motor Speedway, Pagenaud came in second place. After starting in the 20th, Pagenaud finished 3rd at the IndyGP.

Pagenaud's Iowa IndyCar 250 at Iowa Speedway Race 1 entry failed to qualify and started the race at the back of the grid in 23rd due to a fuel pump failure. Pagenaud took the lead by lap 178 and went on to win the 250 lap race.

Pagenaud's 2021 will be the start of a new one as a result of a work year. In general, 2021 was a difficult year for Pagenaud and Team Penske as the team only won three games of the season, with Pagenaud scoring none of them. Two third-place finishes, one in St. Petersburg and the other in the 2021 Indianapolis 500, highlighted Pagenaud's best performances of the season. Outside of those tops, he would often be beset by poor fortune and on-track rivalry with his coworkers. Pagenaud did not intend to re-sign with Team Penske by the end of the season, according to the racing press.

Pagenaud left the Penske team and joined Meyer Shank Racing with former Penske teammate Helio Castroneves after a difficult 2021 season.
