iime Vrsaljko (born 10 January 1992) is a Croatian professional footballer who plays as a right back for Atlético Madrid and the Croatian national team. He made his Croatian debut in 2011 and later represented his country in the UEFA Euro 2012 and 2012 FIFA World Cups.

Personal life

In World War II, Vrsaljko's great-grandfather was killed by the Yugoslav Partisans when his paternal grandfather, whom Vrsaljko was named after, was only several months old. He was buried with the Croatian national team jersey when his grandfather died. Vrsaljko's father, Mladen, served as a commander of special unit force "Poskoci" (Long-Nosed Vipers) during the Croatian War of Independence from 1992 to 1995, and his paternal uncle Svemir is a former mayor of Benkovac, and was also a footballer who served as a former mayor of Benkovac. Vrsaljko was born in 1992 in exile in Rijeka due to the bombing of his hometown, Zadar. Following the war, his family returned to Zadar and nearby Nadin, where his father hails from. Branka (née eli) is a boy from Draevac Ninski near Polinik.

Vrsaljko married Matea Kedo, his high school sweetheart, in June 2017. The young couple's first child, Bruno, was born on June 6, 2018. Vrsaljko's second child, daughter Viktorija, was born in mid-April 2022 after an extramarital affair with Slovenian model Kaja Vidmar. It is said that he and Kedo first broke away in the beginning of that year.

AIPS selected Vrsaljko standing on a Croatian flag on the field of the Luzhniki Stadium in January 2019 after the 2018 World Cup semi-final match against England, taken by Drago Sopta, was named as the fourth most stunning one in the world by AIPS. The photograph was dubbed "legendary" by Croatian media. When asked about its history, Vrsaljko said: 'The government has no origins.'

Club career

Vrsaljko began his senior career at Dinamo Zagreb's feeder team, Lokomotiva, where he spent the 2009–10 seasons on pene. In the match against Rijeka on July 26, 2009 at the age of 17, he made his debut for Lokomotiva in the Croatian top league. In each of the 17 Lokomotiva's league matches in 2009, Vrsaljko was in the starting lineup, but was only used once.

He rejoined Dinamo Zagreb's squad in the Prva HNL's first match against Croatia Sesvete on December 22, 2009 before the winter break and appeared in his first match for the Prva HNL against Croatia Sesvete on February 27. He made nine appearances by the end of the season, including 27 in total. Vrsaljko made one appearance in the 2009–10 Croatian Cup semi-finals.

Vrsaljko was forced to return from international service with the Croatian under-19 team in the 2010-11 season. On July 31, he made his first appearance of the season in a league match against Rijeka, which Dinamo Zagreb lost 2–1. Vrsaljko made his debut in European competitions after losing to Sheriff Tiraspol in the third qualifying round of the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League. He was linked to a transfer to Olympique Marseille for a €4 million fee in August, but the French club's executive vice president turned down the French club's bid. In the match against Cibalia, which Dinamo Zagreb defeated 22-0 on August 29, he scored his first league goal for the club. He was named Croatian Football Hope of the Year for 2010 for his outstanding results for Dinamo under new coach Vahid Halilhodi. He took the double with Dinamo by the end of the season.

In UEFA Champions League qualifier 3–0 victory over Neftchi Baku in Zagreb, he began the 2011-2012 season by assisting Ivan Krstanovi. He was kicked off during the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League away match against Malmö FF as Dinamo qualified for their first UEFA Champions League match in 12 years in August 2011. With three games of suspension in Champions League, he was barred. On Matchday 4 against AFC Ajax, he made his UEFA Champions League debut, and he made his second appearance in the final match against Olympique Lyonnais on Maksimir Stadium against Olympique Lyonnais. As Dinamo claimed their second double – Prva HNL and Hrvatski kup titles – he made 22 league appearances and 5 assists in process.

Since returning from Poland, where he was a member of the Croatian team at UEFA Euro 2012, Dinamo helped Dinamo qualify for another UEFA Champions League. In 2012–13 UEFA Champions League, he made four appearances as right full-back, when Dinamo finished last in the group with just one point. He also played in 25 league appearances, three of whom had three assists.

Vrsaljko joined Genoa for €4.6 million on July 12, 2013. Vrsaljko played on several positions on the right flank, including right-back and right wing, in his first season in the Italian top flight. He made 22 appearances in total, missing rounds 24-33-33 due to injury.

Vrsaljko signed for Serie A's Sassuolo for €3.5 million plus in bonuses worth €2 million on July 22, 2014. He was a central part of Sassuolo's defense under new coach Eusebio Di Francesco, and later helped the team win their first ever Europa League qualification after finishing 6th in Serie A thanks to Juventus Coppa Italia's victory over Milan, who may have migrated to Europe instead if they had won the final.

In 2016, Vrsaljko signed with La Liga team Atlético Madrid under a five-year contract. Vrsaljko started the Europa League final on May 16th, 2018 as Atlético claimed the title.

Vrsaljko joined Inter Milan on a one-year loan with the option to buy on July 31, 2018. Vrsaljko was out for at least six months after suffering left knee ligament ligament surgery on January 27, 2019.

He played his first game against Leganés, which ended in a goalless draw on January 26, 2020. In the 88th minute, he was subbed off for Ivan aponji. He began the home leg of the Champions League round-of-16 match against the ruling champions Liverpool, which resulted in a 1–0 victory. Vrsaljko and teammate ngel Correa were both positive for COVID-19 on August 10, leaving them out of the team's quarter-final match against RB Leipzig.

Vrsaljko returned to the field on December 16th, after undergoing yet another knee injury in the summer, beating Cardassar 3–0.

On July 2, 2022, Vrsaljko signed Vrsaljko, a Greek team in the Greek league, on a free transfer, signing a three-year contract. In a Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa that ended in a 1–1 draw, he made his debut for the club on July 20th.

International career

On the second November 2010, he received his first call-up to the Croatia national football team for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Malta. In a friendly match against the Czech Republic on February 9, 2011, he made his national team debut on February 9, 2011 against the Czech Republic. He made 3 appearances before being named in Croatia's preliminary squad for UEFA Euro 2012. Croatian boss Slaven Bili relegated him from the final list for UEFA Euro 2012 after the friendly match against Estonia in May 2012. However, just a week after being booted from the final list, he was called up again due to the injury of Hamburger SV player Ivo Ilievi. In all three Croatian matches at the tournament, he was an unadequate substitute.

He made only one appearance in the match against Belgium in Zagreb during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying phase. He was selected in the Croatia 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in May 2014. Vrsaljko filled in at the left-back position instead of injured Danijel Pranji, due to injuries in the Croatian squad right before the first match against Brazil. He reprised his role as a left back in the decider against Mexico, which ended as a 3–1 loss and saw Croatia defeated.

He was the captain of Argentina's 2–1 loss against Argentina on November 12, 2014, when he was 22 years old and playing for the entire game. With Darijo Srna rested for the game against Italy, he became one of the youngest captains in the national team's history, with Illustre.

He was named in Croatia's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May 2018. In six of the team's runners-up finish, he appeared in six of the seven games. He appeared in three of the nation's inaugural tournament, but he missed the home game against England due to a knee injury.

After nearly two years of absence due to knee surgery, Vrsaljko returned to the national team in September 2020. He was selected in coach Zlatko Dali's Nations League fixtures against Portugal and France. However, Vrsaljko did not play a single minute until a 2022 World Cup qualifier against Slovenia on March 24-2021, which Croatia lost 1–0. The loss was his first game for the national team in 28 months. However, Dalia's underwhelming results prompted Daliq to drop him from the starting XI in favour of Josip Juranovi ahead of Croatia's Euro 2020 match against Scotland against Scotland, essentially ending his participation in the team's September World Cup qualifiers against Russia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

He will play for the national team for one last game against Denmark on June 10, 2022, before permanently retiring from international football on August 26.
