Sig Hansen Career

Career

Hansen began as a deckhand on his father's boat before he was a teenager, and he worked his way up the ranks. He became a "relief skipper" on the Northwestern, as well as doing short-haul stints on other boats in the fleet at age 22. He began running the Northwestern full-time at the age of 24. Over the years, the boat has established itself as a top manufacturer with a stellar safety record; it has never had a single death at sea during the previous 20 years Hansen has been in command of the Bering Sea fleet; its serious injury rate has been noticeably lower than other boats in the Bering Sea fleet as well. The Northwestern captured the final derby seasons in 2005, both the highest poundage caught and the most money earned between the featured boats in the Deadliest Catch, both in 2005 and 2006. Hansen is the full captain of king and opilio crab seasons as well as the Northwestern's pot cod fishery. Edgar and Norman, his younger brothers, are deck boss and deckhand respectively.

Hansen published his book in March 2010 (co-written with Mark Sundeen) North By Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters, which hit the New York Times and Wall Street Journal's bestseller list.

Hansen appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on April 29, 2010. During the audition, he expressed his desire to be a contestant on the new season of ABC reality television show Dancing with the Stars. Leno's workers created a Facebook fan page to encourage him to be chosen for the competition. Hansen also confirmed in September that he would not return to Deadliest Catch's seventh season. However, Hansen would return to the show in October 2010.

In the Disney Pixar film Cars 2, he portrayed a boat named Crabby (modeled after the Northwestern). In the 14th season of The Celebrity Apprenticeship, he competed.

Hansen was inducted into the Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame in 2014, as well as Tonight Show bandleader Doc Severinsen and singer Bobby Vee.

After seven billion snow crabs mysteriously disappear, third-generation Alaskan fishermen face ruin

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 17, 2022
Fishermen in the Pacific Northwest have suffered financially after the Alaska Department of Fish and Game called off the state's burgeoning snow crab fishing season in the Bering Sea. The news will also have a huge effect on the restaurant industry as the cost rises and shortages become inevitable. Alaska supplies 60% of the country's seafood. According to an ADF&G report, billions of snow crabs had disappeared from the area. Experts disagree on the reasons for the disappearance. According to some scientists, the disappearance is attributed to migration or starvation, both of which can be traced to climate change. Although some believe it could be attributed to an epidemic of disease in the snow crabs, others suspect it could be traced to a snow crab outbreak. According to the report, the snow crab population has decreased by around 90% in the last two years. Snow crabs are most common in Alaska waters in the Bering, Beauford, and Chuckchi seas. Around 65 vessels are currently fishing in these waters. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Bering Sea-based fleet collected about $132 million worth of snow crab from the waters in 2020.
