Shweta Basu Prasad (born 11 January 1991) is an Indian film actress.

She began her career as a child actor in Hindi films and television series before moving on to lead roles in Bengali, Telugu, and Tamil cinema.

She was nominated for her role in Makdee, 2002, and she was named National Film Award for Best Child Artist.

Personal life

Shweta Basu Prasad was born in Jamshedpur, Bihar (Now in Jharkhand) and later moved with her family to Mumbai when she was still a child.

Shweta completed her graduation in mass media and journalism after studying commerce at R. N. Podar High School in Santacruz, Mumbai. She wrote columns for The Indian Express.

Basu, her mother's maiden name, was added to her screen name, and she married filmmaker Rohit Mittal on December 13, 2018. On December 10, 2019, she revealed their split on Instagram.

Shweta started her career at a young age. She started in television but quickly moved to Bollywood. Her debut in Makdee, 2002, was in a double role, for which she was nominated for National Award for Best Child Actress. After her popularity on the silver screen, she received invites from television shows including Kahaani Ghar Kii and Karishma Kaa Karishma. She was once more recognised by director Nagesh Kukunoor and he gave her the film Iqbal in 2005, and she became a household name in the role of "Khadija" in the film. At the 5th Karachi International Film Festival for Iqbal, she received the Best Supporting Actress Award.

Shweta took a break after Iqbal and continued her studies. She is a graduate of Journalism and Mass Media, and she produced an Indian Classical Music documentary starring the music industry's legends. Shweta spent four years between 2012 and 2016, shooting musicians including Shubha Mudgal, A R Rahman, Pandit Sharma, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ajit Trivedi, and Amjad Ali Khan, among others. A ten-minute animation clip illustrating a 5000-year history of Indian music is included in the film. Shweta, a classical music enthusiast who grew this project from her own pocket, is now available on Netflix, and Roots, her documentary film, is also available on Netflix.

With the film Kotha Bangaru Lokam, Shweta made her debut in Telugu cinema in 2008. She has produced eight films in Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.

Shweta has explored behind-the-camera work and worked as a script consultant at Phantom Films in addition to film and television.

Shweta was arrested from a hotel in Hyderabad after a police raid in September 2014. She was arrested by the police on suspicion of prostitution and escorted to a rescue facility, where she was detained for two months. All charges against her were dismissed in December by the Metropolitan Sessions Court in Nampally, Hyderabad. She released an open letter to the media confirming that she was deceive and deceptive, which was attributed to her by a reporter at the time of her detention.
