Shirley Rosemary Stelfox (11 April 1941 – December 7, 2015) was an English actress known for her portrayal of Edna Birch, a moralising busybody in a Yorkshire village in ITV soap opera Emmerdale, and as Rose, sister of the late and overbearing Hyacinth Bucket in the first series of the comedy series Keeping Up Appearances.

Early life

Stelfox was born in Dukinfield, Cheshire, on April 11, 1941. She suffered from bilateral amblyopia, which made her short-sighted. Edward Fox, John Thaw, and Sarah Miles were among her students at RADA, where she studied. During the years of her study at the Lakes Road Secondary School in Dukinfield, she was playing in pantomimes and in theaters.

Personal life

Stelfox was married to Keith Edmundson for three years. Helena was a child from this marriage and she had a daughter, Helena. Don Henderson married actress Don Henderson in 1979, and the two were together until his death from throat cancer in 1997. They lived in Stratford-upon-Avon, where she helped bring up Henderson's two children from his first marriage. After Henderson's death, she moved to rural Nottinghamshire.

Art Stelfox's first appearance in a play called The Case Before You, in which she played a 15-year-old arsonist, the prompter did not respond to her long pauses. In December 1960, she appeared in her first episode of Coronation Street. She would later play many characters in the world-famous soap opera, including, in 1983, running a dating company in which one of her clients was the entrance cue for Jack Duckworth. Stelfox appeared in an episode of Grange Hill as a Secretary at the school in 1983. In the first series of Keeping Up Appearances, she was the first actress to play Hyacinth Bucket's randy sister Rose, but she was later replaced by Mary Millar. Inspector Morse, Jane Healy, Melanie Owen's mother, appeared in many other well-known television series, including the popular Wicked Women, Making Out with Margi Clarke, Mrs Parkin in Heartbeat, and Inspector Morse. Albion Market, a short-lived series, starred her. Stelfox appeared in various soap operas for a long time, but was briefly on Crossroads (as a police officer) and Family Affairs. Madge Richmond (1986–1987), where she depicted two-time widowed pensioner Ralph Hardwick (Ray Dunbobbin), and Jane Healy appeared on two episodes of EastEnders in 1999. She appeared in Hobson's Choice (1967), Helen in Civvies (1992), Jean Clegg in Three Seven Eleven (1994–2000), Lucy Sullivan Is Married (1999–2000).

In Pat and Margaret (1994), Stelfox played Julie Walters and Victoria Wood, the mother of Julie Walters and Victoria Wood. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, a film adaptation of the George Orwell novel starring John Hurt and Richard Burton, her best-known film role came as the "$2.00 Prostitute." She was somewhat played as a prostitute in Terry Jones' comedy Personal Services (1987), based on Madame Cyn's life, and entertainers and politicians.

Stelfox appeared in Not Now, Darling, 1968) and Phoebe in Toad of Toad Hall (Duke of York's theatre, 1970). In Stand Up Sweetie Pie, directed by June Brown, the stalwart of EastEnders, the show must have appeared on stage rather than in the West End; it originated in 1993 at the Nottingham Playhouse rather than in the West End. In 1972 and 1970, she appeared in King Lear at the Ludlow Festival and at the Connaught Theatre, as Teresa Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and in 1974, she appeared in Uncle Vanya.
