Sheldon Harnick Career

Musical career

When Harnick was still in Carl Schurz High School in Chicago, he began writing music. He obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from the Northwestern University School of Music (1946-49) and performed with various orchestras in the Chicago area as a result of his Army service. He then moved to New York City and wrote for many musicals and revues. He was a student at Charlotte Rae's college and he went to see her one night at the Village Vanguard, where she was performing a revue. Yip Harburg, one of Harnick's idols, heard she was performing a song of his own and decided to appear. Harnick told Harnick that he loved his writing and encouraged him to keep writing. Harnick was advised by Harburg not to work with a large number of composers. He also advised him to write character and comedies, not ballads for Broadway. The Kingston Trio's "The Merry Minuet" was one of his compositions.

Harnick first met Jerry Bock in 1956, forming "what is unquestionably the most important musical partnership of the '60s." The Body Beautiful was their first musical, but Fiorello! (1959) appeared in 795 productions and received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. "Because one of the most beloved of all Broadway musicals, Fiddler on the Roof (1964) "became one of the most cherished of all Broadway musicals."

Harnick wrote the libretto for the opera Coyote Tales, with music by Henry Mollicone, which made their world premiere at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City in March 1998. He wrote the book, music, and lyrics to the musical Dragons, which were on display at the Luna Stage in Montclair, New Jersey, in 2003. He wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book The Phantom Tollbooth, based on Juster's book. In 2007, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts premiered at the Kennedy Center.

In 2014, Harnick released Sheldon Harnick: Hidden Treasures (1949–2013), which featured recordings of song demos and parts cut from Broadway shows from his private collection. Harnick acted on a musical adaptation of Evgeny Schwartz's Soviet play The Dragon.
