McCarthy is one of Canada's most respected actors, having received two Genie Awards (film), two Gemini Awards (television), an ACTRA Award, and two Dora Awards (theatre) as well as several nominations.

Early life

McCarthy was born in Toronto, Ontario. In her youth, she attended Thornlea Secondary School in Thornhill. At 6 years old, she appeared on stage for the first time in Peter Pan. She later attended the University of Victoria and spent a year with the influential acting professor Uta Hagen at her HB Studio in New York City, as well as participating in the Second City troupe in Toronto.

McCarthy earned a grant nomination for Best Actress in a Dramatic Program after many years of television work under her belt. Polly, the eccentric, "organizationally impaired girl" in Patricia Rozema's I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, made her first appearance on Canadian cinema in this year. McCarthy received the Genie Award for Best Actress for his role. The film went on to become a hit in Canada, winning many international and domestic awards as well as critical recognition, with some commentators naming it a Canadian masterpiece.

McCarthy has since been named as one of Canada's most respected actors, winning two Genie Awards (film), two Gemini Awards (television), and two Dora Awards (theatre) as well as multiple nominations.

Sarah Hamoudi appeared in the Canadian television series Little Mosque on the Prairie (2007-2012), for which she was nominated for a Gemini award. Samantha, the news reporter in Bruce Willis' film Die Hard 2 is one of her most well-known big-screen roles. Connie Hendrix, mother of the clone Alison of the BBC America series Orphanage, and Agnes Rofa in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy are two of her most recent appearances.

She is also a great voice actress, having appeared in Free Willy, Mythic Warriors: Guardians of the Legend, Richard Scarry's The Neverending Story, Bad Dog, and Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse.

McCarthy has appeared in Little Shop of Horrors, Hamlet, Cabaret, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes, and Love Letters, among other performances.
