Early life
Mitchell was born in Mississauga, Ontario, and the niece of Precious Garcia and Mark Mitchell. Her father is of Scottish and Irish descent, and her mother, who is Filipina, is from Pampanga and left the Philippines at age 19. She is Lea Salonga's first cousin, a singer and musical theater actress, who was born in Lea Salonga. She attended Rockridge Secondary School and then transferred to West Vancouver Secondary School, where she graduated. Mitchell had successfully modelled for a number of companies in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Barcelona by her late teens, before returning to Toronto to study acting.
Personal life
Mitchell helped Somaly Mam Foundation, a non-profit group that battled sex trafficking, until it ceased operations in 2014. She has also worked with The Trevor Project, alongside the Pretty Little Liars cast and the NOH8 campaign. She works for the WE Charity, which supports communities in need of educational assistance, and she collaborated with Represent Clothing to support tees, where half of the funds went to GLAAD.

Career
Mitchell began acting in 2009, making cameo appearances on the Canadian teenage drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation and the police drama series Rookie Blue. She appeared in the music video for Jamaican rapper Sean Paul's "Hold My Hand" in 2009.
Mitchell was cast as Emily Fields in the Freeform film Pretty Little Liars, a spin on the book series of the same name. She first applied for Spencer Hastings, but she was turned down, and Troian Bellisario was put in the role; later, she attempted for Emily Fields and was cast in the role.
