Shaunae Miller-Uibo Life

Shaunae Miller-Uibo (born 15 April 1994) is a Bahamian sprinter who competes in the 200 and 400 meters.

She was the 400 meters Olympic champion in 2016 and was the 200 m gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

She received 400 m silver in 2015 and 2019 and 200 m bronze in 2017, both in 2015 and 2019. Miller-Uibo won her first senior medal (and bronze) at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2010.

In 2017, she was the IAAF Diamond League champion in both 200 m and 400 meters. With a time of 48.37 seconds, she set the fastest Bahamian over 400 meters in the Bahamian national record for the 200 meters.

In the 200 meters straight and 300 meters indoor races, she holds unofficial world records.

She has won many national titles in 200 m and 400 m, as well as the NCAA Division I Indoor title for the Georgia Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.

Early life

Miller-Uibo, of Afro-Bahamian origins, was born in a Christian home to Mabelene and Shaun Miller in Nassau, Bahamas, the granddaughter and niece of pastors. She has a personal faith and a faith in God. Shauntae-Ashleigh Miller, Miss Universe Bahamas 2020, is her sister.

She obtained her high school education at St. Augustine's College in Nassau and later attended the University of Georgia.

Miller met Maicel Uibo, an Estonian decathlete who gained silver at the 2019 World Championships, in Georgia, where the pair married in 2017.

Career

Miller-Uibo competed in athletics from a young age and gained five awards at the 2007 Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships in Athletics in the under-14 division. The 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships and bronze medals were awarded in relay races.

She won the 400 m titles at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships and 2010 CARIFTA Games, as well as four awards with the Bahamas in the 4 100 meters relay and 4 400 meters relay. Miller-Uibo, a sixteen-year-old girl, became the first Bahamian to win the 400 meters at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics and the youngest woman to win the event. She won the gold medal in 52.52, defeating Margaret Etim, who finished second in 53.05 (this was the lowest winning time in the event's history).

Miller-Uibo won the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics in a record of 51.84, becoming the first person to hold both the U20 and U18 championship 400 m titles concurrently. She defended her 400 m crown at the 2011 CARIFTA Games, but she was disqualified in the final. She also failed in her defense at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics, placing fourth in fourth place. At the 2012 CARIFTA Games, she did win 200 m and 4 400 meters relay silver medals. She earned three gold medals (200 m, 400 meters relay) at the 2013 CARIFTA Games, and was named as the best athlete of the tournament in her last age category competition.

Miller-Uibo did not finish her 400 meters heat at the 2012 Olympics. Miller-Uibo became a professional in 2013 after signing a sponsorship contract with Adidas. She won her first international final at the 2014 World Championships in Athletics, finishing fourth in the 200 m.

Athletissima and Memorial Van Damme met in the top class in the 2015 season, her first appearance in the IAAF Diamond League. Miller-Uibo was awarded the silver medal in the 400 m at the 2015 World Championships. She also competed with the Bahamian women's 4 4 400 meters relay team in the heats of the Bahamian national record of 3:28.46 minutes.

Miller-Uibo took the Prefontaine Classic 400 m title in 2016.

Miller-Uibo was the first Bahamian woman to run under 22 seconds in the 200 meters at the 2017 Prefontaine Classic, bringing her own national record to 21.91 seconds. She set a new world record of 21.76 on June 4, 2017, much surpassing Allyson Felix's previous record of 22.55. She captured the bronze medal in the 200 meters at the 2017 World Championships in London. In the 400 meters run, she came in fourth place. Miller-Uibo won both the 400 meters and the 200 m Diamond League titles this year, making her the first Bahamian to win a Diamond League championship.

Miller-Uibo won the 400 m silver medal in Qatar in 2018, tying the tenth fastest time in history, a national record of 48.37 seconds, having dominated the 200 m in 2018 and 19, and record-breaking time in the 400 m in 2018. Salwa Eid Naser, the event's champion, had been provisionally suspended by the Athletics integrity Unit in June 2020 for failing four anti doping tests in a period of a year, the last of which was in January 2020.

Miller-Uibo set a new Balance Indoor Grand Prix record in New York on February 13th, 2021, setting a new NACAC record for the indoor 400 meters. She began her outdoor season in 22.03 seconds, her fastest ever 200 m opener, at the Pure Athletics Spring Invitational in Clermont, Florida.

She won the women's 400m event at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in March 2022, her first international appearance as a senior, after her bronze indoor debut in 2014. Miller-Uibo won her first senior world outdoor title at the Eugene 2022 in a time of 49.11, winning by almost half a second in leading a Caribbean sweep later this year. Afterwards, she declared that she is looking forward to switch her main sport to the 200 meters and possibly the heptathlon.

She took the gold medal in the 400 meters, diving across the line to beat Allyson Felix by 0.07 seconds and record a personal record time of 49.44 seconds at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she was the flag bearer for the Bahamas. Miller-Uibo won the gold medal in the 400m at the 2020 Olympics, which were held in Tokyo in 2021.
