Shaun Udal Career

International career

He competed in ten One Day Internationals in 1994 and 1995, including the winter tour of Australia, but not for the Test team at that time. He was not recalled to the England squad for the tour of Pakistan until September 2005, after an excellent season with Hampshire, when they were searching for more spinners in comparison to Ashley Giles. At the age of 36, he made his Test debut in the first Test of the tour. He was somewhat disappointed in his first three Tests, taking only three wickets, although he did have some runs in the lower order.

Nevertheless, he held his place on the Indian tour for later this winter and returned to Mumbai for the third and final Test. He was instrumental in England's victory, taking 4 wickets for 14 runs in the second innings, including Sachin Tendulkar for 34 runs as England claimed a 212-run victory.

With Ashley Giles' continued unavailability due to her injuries, Udal began the 2006 season in contention with Monty Panesar for England's spinning berth. He was not selected for the opening three-Test series against Sri Lanka, nor for the Ashes tour of Australia, which began in November 2006.

He played his first ODI match against Pakistan on October 21, 2005, which is a record for England.

Domestic career

He appeared for Hampshire between 1989 and 2007. In the final of the former against Warwickshire, he helped the county win the 1991 NatWest Trophy, the 1992 Benson & Hedges Cup, and the 2005 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy as captain. He wrote a weekly column about his time at Hampshire over the County Cricket season.

He announced on September 17, 2007 that he would withdraw from first-class cricket at the end of the 2007 season. On October 30, 2007, he signed minor county teams Berkshire as their professional for the 2008 season and was also scheduled to play for Henley in the Homes Counties League, but Udal returned to first-class cricket after completing a two-year deal with Middlesex.

It was announced on October 25th, 2008, that he would be the Club Captain for the 2009 season. He was selected in the preliminary 30 man squad for England's 2009 World Twenty20 Championships on April 6, 2009. Udal took his 800th wicket, that of Gloucestershire bowler Steve Kirby, during the 2010 County Championships. Following an uneven start to the year, he resigned as the County Captain on June 11th with immediate effect. Adam Gilchrist was hired on an interim basis and oversaw the county for five twenty20 matches and a tourist fixture before he departed on June 24th. After this date, Neil Dexter took on the role permanently. Udal announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the 2010 season.

Udal, a former England spinner, discusses his struggle with Parkinson's disease and his love of Bazball

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 22, 2023
BY PAUL NEWMAN, an exclusive, is a British cricketer who has been planning to never fulfill his last great cricketing aspirations. I can't imagine playing a game now,' said the former England, Hampshire, and Middlesex off-spinner, who, four years ago, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. 'I can't hold the ball because my hands would shake so much I'd be bowling long hops and full tosses even more than I used to!
