In 2002, the Minnesota Vikings announced him as an undrafted free agent.
At Maryland, he played college football.
Hill has appeared for the Amsterdam Admirals, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, and the St. Louis Rams.
Early years
Hill was a three-year starter at quarterback and two-year starter at free safety on the high school football team at Parsons, Kansas. He was a two-time All-Southeast Kansas League 1st-team pick and an honorable mention All-State as a senior.
Hill was also an basketball, track, and baseball analyst in addition to football. He served as a team captain in hoops for three years and was named All-State champion for three years, and he served as a sophomore and senior coach with Parsons in the state tournament for three years. He held all five positions for the little school program at a time, and set career goals for assists, robbery, blocks, and 3-point field goals. He competed in track & field, winning the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4 m, 4 m, 4 m, 4 m, and 400 m) as a junior and senior, as well as qualifying for the state championships in three events during his last year. He was a second team All-conference pick as a sophomore and spent time as a shortstop and pitcher in baseball.
Personal life
Hill, a Maryland kinesiology professor, worked at a forensic laboratory. He has been involved in numerous Viking Children's Fund activities and has helped the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Mike Tice, the former Vikings Head Coach, was a former Terrapin quarterback and was teammates with former Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson. On his former team's website, Vikings.com, Hill maintained a weekly journal chronicling his travels in Europe for fans.
College career
Hill was not heavily recruited out of high school. He was able to receive a scholarship as a punter, not a quarterback, at Pittsburg State University. Hill decided to attend Hutchinson Community College for two years as a result of this. Hill won honorable mention All-American awards as a freshman and sophomore, despite being a freshman and sophomore at the time. His junior college success drew Division I notice, and he eventually decided to attend college at University of Maryland. He was primarily a back-up as a freshman, leading the Maryland Terrapins to their first Atlantic Coast Conference title since 1985 as a senior. They earned a trip to the 2002 Orange Bowl and finished the year ranked #10 in the country. He had 3,158 yards and 19 touchdowns in his Maryland career.

Professional career
Hill, who was not invited to the 2002 NFL Scouting Combine, was not drafted in the 2002 NFL Draft, and he did not want to be drafted. He signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent the season as a 3rd-string backup. On the final two plays of the 2005 NFL season, he made his first career snaps for the Vikings, taking a knee both times.
Hill spent the spring of 2003 with the Amsterdam Admirals of Football Europe, where he led the league in passing yards and tied for second in touchdowns and finished second in touchdowns.
Hill ranked third on the San Francisco 49ers' depth chart in 2006, behind Trent Dilfer and Alex Smith. He went 15/20 (65.2%) for 162 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. He played on the sidelines during the 2006 regular season, receiving no snaps.
In the San Francisco 49ers' 17-13 preseason opener to the Denver Broncos on August 16, 2007, Hill completed 13 of 20 passes for 148 yards with one interception. He had a blast in the red zone, throwing one intercept in his first attempt and then almost throwing an intercept at a different location the second time down the field. Hill attempted to put the 49ers in field goal range to tie the game in the last game of the 2007 preseason against the San Diego Chargers. With 16 seconds remaining on the clock, he threw two deep balls to his wide receivers, but they missed their targets, and the second was intercepted, leaving the game with the Chargers ahead, 16-13.
After Trent Dilfer sustained a serious concussion, Hill made his 49ers regular-season debut on December 9, 2007. In a loss to his former team, the Minnesota Vikings, he completed 22 of 27 pass attempts for 181 yards and one touchdown. Hill was dismissive of his results, saying, "There [are] a slew of things I need to get better at." Some of it involves getting back to playing again. Any items made me want to throw up. The execution was flawed on some aspects, but the results on my part were encouraging. Here are a few things I've skipped. The results were much better than my execution."
Hill made his first NFL debut against the Cincinnati Bengals on December 15, 2007, when Dilfer's injury was severe enough to suspend him for the remainder of the season. Hill completed 21 of 28 pass attempts for 197 yards, passed for a touchdown, and threw a touchdown. Hill was supposed to start the 2007 season as the starter.
The 49ers revealed on December 18, 2007, that they had a keen interest in re-signing Hill to put them in contention against Alex Smith. However, the contract extension, as well as its talks, was dependent on Hill's performance for the remainder of the season. Hill made his second appearance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on December 23, 2007. To Darrell Jackson, fellow Terrapin Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore, he completed 11 of 24 pass attempts for 123 yards and three touchdown passes. The 49ers won 21-19.
Hill sustained a back injury during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Week 16 game, when rookie Gaines Adams struck him after a throw, resulting in a 15-yard personal foul. As a result, Hill was unable to participate in week 17 against the Cleveland Browns. Chris Weinke played in his role.
Hill signed a new 3-year deal with the 49ers in February 2008, but no contract terms were announced to the public. In preparation camp and the 2008 preseason, the undrafted Hill competed for the starting job against Alex Smith and J. T. O'Sullivan. After Smith was put on injured reserve early in the season, O'Sullivan was able to return to work, and Hill became the primary backup.
Hill did not play until 49ers interim head coach Mike Singletary took over on October 27. After J. T. O'Sullivan's second turnover against the Seattle Seahawks and being turned down for a touchdown, he was suspended from the game, but Hill replaced him with a strong output: 15 of 23 for 173 yards with one touchdown to Jason Hill and no turnovers, but the 49ers lost 34-13.
Despite the loss, Hill was named as the No. One on the street, despite the tragedy. For the remainder of the 2008 season, 1QB was the most popular position. On Monday Night Football against the Arizona Cardinals, he made his 2008 debut in week 10.
According to reports, Nolan and offensive coordinator Mike Martz reportedly made up reports about Hill's tired arm in the preseason so that O'Sullivan, who was offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, would start the game without a challenge.
Hill gave a solid showing in the first half on Monday Night Football against the highly favored Arizona Cardinals. Josh Morgan scored a 31-yard touchdown to put the 49ers up 14-3 and then scored a 20-yard touchdown to Vernon Davis right before halftime. In the second half, Hill made an interception at a crucial time to put the Cardinals up by 24-29. On an attempted shovel pass at the Arizona 20-yard line, Hill completed his second interception on an attempted shovel pass. Despite all of this, Hill drove the 49ers down the field twice, the first with 3:39, and the second with only 1:04 seconds on the game clock. The 49ers' last game of the season was a triumph for Jason Hill to bring the 49ers to the Arizona goal line. The 49ers were unfortunate to miss the game-winning touchdown. Coincidentally, the 49ers rode to the goal line against the Cardinals on Monday Night Football of the 2007 season, and they were able to score the game-winning touchdown.
In a 35-16 victory over the St. Louis Rams, Hill set a new single-game passing record in yards for the third time in weeks 11 and 12. For his appearance, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Hill lost his first 300-yard passing game in week 12, losing to the Dallas Cowboys.
Hill posted an impressive comeback victory against the St. Louis Rams in Week 16. After throwing three interceptions in the first three quarters, 49ers coaches Mike Singletary and Mike Martz were planning to bench Hill for J. T. O'Sullivan. Hill begged his coach to leave him in the game and then led the 49ers on an 80-yard run, with Isaac Bruce receiving a touchdown pass for his 1000th career reception. Hill fielded the ball back and completed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Josh Morgan, who was down 16-10 and under three minutes on the clock. Marc Bulger was intercepted by the 49ers defense, putting an end to any hopes of a Rams comeback and capping Hill's first big late-game rally win.
Hill was having a tough time against the Washington Redskins in week 17, throwing an intercept in the first half and no touchdowns. Hill took the lead in the fourth quarter by completing a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jason Hill. Hill later in the game tied at 24-24, with one minute remaining on the game clock to set up a game-winning Joe Nedney field goal.
Hill climbed to a 5-3 record on the season and a 7-3 record as a starter all time. He had 13 passing touchdowns, 2 rushing touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 2,046 passing yards, and an 87.5 quarterback rating in 9 games (as a starter).
Hill will be the starting quarterback in training camp in 2009, according to 49ers head coach Mike Singletary, but will face former number one overall draft pick Alex Smith for the regular season starting job.
Hill was selected to start the 49ers' preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, where he would only throw two passes.
Hill was named the 49ers' starting quarterback for the regular season on August 25, defending his starting position over Smith.
Hill made his season-opening debut against the Arizona Cardinals on September 13. Hill defeated the game 20-16 after giving Frank Gore a fourth-quarter touchdown pass. Hill went 8-3 as a starter after winning.
Hill completed 19 of 26 passes for 144 yards and also ran once for 17 yards against the Seattle Seahawks this week. Hill would continue his undefeated streak of six home victories as the 49ers defeated the 49ers 23-10. He extended it to 7-0 after a 35-0 drubbing of St. Louis.
Interestingly, one of Hill's best games came in week 3 against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. Hill was 15/25 for 195 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception in the game. Hill led the 49ers to a lead near the end of the game, but the Vikings won with a 30-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining.
Singletary benched Hill and brought Alex Smith into the game after a scoreless first half in the game against the Houston Texans in week 7. Smith converted the 49ers from 0-21 to 21-24, with three touchdowns. Although the 49ers lost the game, Smith's comeback earned him the starting quarterback position in the upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts on November 1. Hill was Smith's backup for the remainder of the season.
Hill was traded to the Detroit Lions in return for a seventh round draft pick in 2011. On July 12, 2010, the Lions announced him to a one-year deal. Matthew Stafford, the Lions' first game of the 2010 season, was suspended. Hill threw 9 completions on 19 attempts, with 88 yards and one interception, bringing Detroit to within 30 seconds. Hill threw what seemed to be the game-winning touchdown but was later found incomplete by a technicality in the NFL rule book, which now is referred to as the "Calvin Johnson Rule." He was hospitalized while filling in for the injured Matthew Stafford against the New York Giants on October 17, 2010. The Lions announced that he had sustained a fractured left (non-throwing) forearm. Hill began the season with victories against the Miami Dolphins and the Minnesota Vikings, and the Lions finished 6-10.
He has since been regarded as one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL, and he has been consistently successful on his appearances.
On March 26, 2014, he signed a one-year deal with the St. Louis Rams. Hill was named the new starter by coach Jeff Fisher following a season-ending ACL injury to starter Sam Bradford in a preseason game on August 23, 2014. Hill was on Week 2 when Austin Davis was named starter instead. Davis was suspended again in favor of Hill after a poor showing against the Arizona Cardinals in late November. Hill finished the 2014 season with 1,657 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and an 83.9 quarterback rating in nine games with 8 starts.
Hill signed with the Minnesota Vikings on March 10, 2015. Teddy Bridgewater suffered a concussion against the St. Louis Rams in Week 9. Hill ruled the rest of the game, which the Vikings won 21-18 in overtime.
Hill was selected to start Week 1 of the 2016 season over Sam Bradford, who the Vikings traded for after Bridgewater's injury. In the 25-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans, Hill completed 18 of 33 passes for 236 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
