S Shankar Life

Shankar Shanmugam (born 17 August 1963), also known as S. Shankar and sometimes mononymously as Shankar, is an Indian film maker who principally works in Tamil cinema.

He made his debut as a producer in the film Gentleman (1993), for which he received the Filmfare Best Director Award and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Director. Shankar's films tend to focus on contemporary social problems and militant themes.

He is one of India's highest-paid, as well as innovative film designers, best known for their use of special effects, prosthetic makeup, and state-of-art technology in songs. He often works with composer A. R. Rahman, who have worked on over ten films together.

Both of his films, Indian (1996) and Jeans (1998), were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in India.

M. G. R. University has given him an honorary doctorate.

His film 2.0 (2018) is India's second highest-grossing film and the sixth highest-grossing Indian film in the world.

Early life

Shankar was born in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, to Muthulakshmi and Shanmugam, on August 17th. Prior to entering the film industry, he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Central Polytechnic College. He was hired into the film industry as a screenwriter by S. A. Chandrasekhar, who mistakenly attended Shankar's drama stage shows. Despite wanting to be an actor, he turned to be a producer instead and became one of India's most popular directors.

S Shankar Career

Career

Shankar began his career as an actor in the films Vasantha Raagam (1986 and Seetha). He later became an assistant to film producers such as S. A. Chandrasekhar and Pavithran. In Jai Shankar (1990), directed by Rajesh Khanna, his first break in Hindi cinema was as an assistant director. Nanbargal was S. A. Chandrasekhar's last film.

Through Gentleman, he made his directing debut in 1993. The film, starring Arjun Sarja, was made with a higher budget in Tamil cinema at the time, received positive feedback and became a blockbuster. In his subsequent 6 directorial ventures, A. R. Rahman, the film's music composer, began to collaborate with Shankar.

Prabhu Deva was in lead role in his second film Kadhalan, a romantic-action film that was released in the following year. In 1996, he worked with Kamal Haasan for Indian. It was dubbed Bharateeeyudu in Hindi as Hindustani and Telugu. The film was selected as the country's nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Shankar started work on Jeans, which was released in 1998 and became India's most expensive film at the time with a budget of 200 million. It became one of the best grossing Tamil films of the 1990s upon its introduction. He made his film debut in 1999 with Mudhalvan (1999). Arjun Sarja joined the initiative.

Shankar converted Mudhalvan in Hindi as Nayak, making his Bollywood debut. Nayak, who was released in September 2001, was classified as a "Flop" by Box Office India due to poor exposure, a high budget, and distribution price. Despite not doing well at the box office, it went on to claim cult status. Shankar started to work on his next film, which was supposed to be a science fiction film called Robot and was supposed to have Kamal Haasan as the lead, but it was stalled due to Kamal Haasan's commitment to other projects. The scheme could not progress forward due to budget constraints later this year.

In 2003, his musical entertainer film Boys debuted in 2003, which received mixed feedback from the critics and audience, causing it to do only average sales. However, the Telugu dubbed version of Boys in Andhra Pradesh was a huge hit. Anniyan, a psychological thriller starring Vikram in three distinct roles (Ambi, Remo & Anniyan), was released in 2005 by Harris Jayaraj as the composer for his film. Anniyan debuted as the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2005. Shortly after Anniyan's debut, it was announced that Shankar had collaborated with Rajinikanth and AVM Productions for a film. With the film, he recalled his relationship with A. R. Rahman. Sivaji was made on a budget of 600 million, the most expensive Indian film at the time. He was paid a whopping $100 million for the film. The film was released in 2007 after two years of filming. In the end, it became one of the highest grossing Tamil films of the decade.

Shankar revisited the possibilities of opinion regarding Robot's script, and he later decided to make the venture in Tamil with Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai. The film was made on a budget of 1.32 billion, according to Kalanithi Maran, the South Indian media owner. According to some, it is also one of the largest grossing Tamil films of the time. Shankar began to work on Nanban, the Tamil remake of the 2009 Hindi film 3 Idiots starring Vijay, Jiiva, and Srikanth, following initial reports that Shankar's next film is supposed to be with Siddharth. In January 2012, the film was first released. It was mistakenly reported that Shankar's next film would be named Therdal after Nanban. Shankar's next film, I, will be released on June 21, 2012. Vikram narrated the roles of a bodybuilder, fashion model, and hunchback in this romantic drama. After Anniyan, he was his second collaboration with Shankar after Anniyan, and Amy Jackson was the female lead and his second collaboration with her after Thaandavam. The film, which was shot over a period of two and a half years, received mixed praises on January 14 and nearly 2 billion in 19 days. Then began working on 2.0, a sequel to Enthiran's, which was released on November 29th, 2018 with mixed feedback. However, it went on to become India's seventh highest-grossing film ever. Shankar is currently working on Indian 2, a sequel to Indian starring Kamal Haasan, as of February 2021. He revealed his team-up with Ram Charan and Kiara Advani under the direction of Dil Raju's Sri Venkateswara Creations, making his Telugu debut. He revealed his collaboration with Ranveer Singh two months later, in April 2021. It will be produced by Jayantilal Gada at Pen Studios, and it will be the official version of his own Anniyan.
