Early life
West was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the son of Leah Catherine (née Launey), a lawyer) and Don Snaith, a drugstore owner. Both his parents were musicians and had their own punk bands. His mother is of Cajun French descent, and his father was born in Jamaica, of British and Portuguese-Jewish origins. With a sister Simone and a half-sister Marli Ann, he is the eldest of three children. In 1982, his parents divorced when he was four years old. He grew up listening to the Clash, the Jam, Blondie, Elvis Costello, and the Kinks, influenced by his parents. "I always thought I'd be doing music rather than acting," he said.
West and his sister Simone moved to Compton, California, with their mother, who was looking for a better job at ten years old. They then moved to Norwalk, California. West went by his feminine first name but changed his name to Shane West in High school when he first began acting, embarrassing him. He suffered for two years and lived at his boss's house before making his acting debut in 1995, where he appeared in the CBS drama Picket Fences, where he played Dave Lattimore.
Personal life
West is a sports enthusiast and ardent supporter of the New Orleans Saints and the LSU Tigers football teams. In 2019, he contributed to some of the team's pre-season videos. During the filming of the series Nikita, he lived in Toronto, Canada.
Career
West appeared in numerous television series, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Mark Tapper in The Cider House Rules. He appeared in 1999 in ABC's "Reality and Again" as Eli Sammler for three seasons. In Liberty Heights, a film about a Jewish family in Baltimore directed by Barry Levinson, West's first feature film appearance was in Liberty Heights. He appeared in teen comedies Whatever It Takes (2000) and Get Over It (2001).
In 2002's version of Nicholas Sparks' book A Walk to Remember, West was cast as Landon Carter opposite singer and actress Mandy Moore. "Queetly convincing" was Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times. For his role in the film, he received a Teen Choice Award for Choice Chemistry with Moore. He appeared in "Cry," a Mandy Moore music video. West was filming What We Do Is Secret, an independent film that premiered at the 2007 Los Angeles Film Festival after much postponement. It was funded by West in the United States. Darby Crash, a member of the 1970s punk band the Germs, is depicted in the film. Members of the band were so impressed by West's appearance that they reformed the band with West taking the place of the deceased Crash. West's role in the film received raves; the San Francisco Chronicle reported that he is the one who "lifts the entire film to a whole new degree." In the same manner, The Seattle Times wrote that his impersonation was "worth celebrating," while TV Guide called it "pretty impressive." In 2008, he received the Rising Star Award in the Philadelphia Film Festival for his role in What We Do is Unknown.
