Sergio Agüero Career

Club career

Sergio Agüero joined Independence's youth system at the age of nine. He began playing for the team, becoming the youngest player to play in the first division for 15 years and 35 days (versus Club Atlético San Lorenzo, Almagro), when Independence's coach, Oscar Ruggeri, sent Agüero into the field as a replacement for Emanuel Rivas in the 69th minute of the match. The press loved his appearance. Despite his early debut, Ruggeri and his replacement Osvaldo Sosa were not chosen again by Ruggeri and his successor Osvaldo Sosa for the remainder of the 2002–03 season, despite having made only one appearance in the Torneo Clausura. Coach Jose Omar Pastoriza's arrival seven months after Agüero's first match, he returned to the team's first team in a 4–2 victory over Peru's Cienciano in the group stages of the 2004 Copa Libertadores. He then became the youngest player to play in the Copa Libertadores, a record that he held for three years. Agüero has appeared in a Copa Libertadores match against Ecuador's El Nacional just one month later. Agüero played a complete 90-minute match against Atlético de Rafaela on June 19th, for the first time. In a 2–2 draw against Estudiantes on Friday, he scored his first goal for Innocence in a 2–2 draw, with a 22nd minute shot from outside the penalty zone. Agüero played for the Argentina U-20 team in 2005, the first team in the Argentina U-20 World Cup, which Argentina defeated.

Agüero scored 18 goals in 36 league appearances from 2005 to 2006, despite missing two games due to suspension. He dribbled from inside his own half and scored Independence's fourth goal with a left footed shot in a 4–0 victory over Racing on September 11th. After slapping an opponent in a match against Tiro Federal, he played his first red card in the Torneo Apertura. His outstanding performances during the Torneo Apertura attracted fetus from a number of major European clubs, and Agüero revealed on television in April that he intends to leave the club at the end of the season. There had already been rumors of a potential transfer to Atlético Madrid by the end of the season. With his appearances being lauded by the media, Agüero's calls for him have been speculated about a potential call-up for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Agüero received his fifth yellow card of the season in a 2–0 away victory over Olimpo de Bahia Blanca in round 17 of the Torneo Clausura. Independence was suspended from playing his last game against Boca Juniors in Avellaneda one week later. As television cameras caught, the yellow card brought tears to his eyes. Agüero, who scored Independiente's second goal of the match later, said, "I think that it was my last goal for Independiente." In a 2–0 home loss to Rosario Central, he played his last game for Independence in two weeks. Agüero officially transferred to Atlético Madrid for €20 million on May 30th, a record for the team.

Agüero began his playing time with the Rojiblancos in the summer of 2007, and shortly became the team's most important player at the age of 19. He was the third highest scorer in La Liga in 2007, behind Daniel Güiza and Lus Fabiano, who both scored 19 goals, and runner-up in the Trofeo Di Stéfano award in 2007. Agüero received many accolades for his man of the match performance against Barcelona in March 2008, scoring twice, assisting a goal, and winning a penalty for Atlético in a 4–2 win.
