Sergey Vyacheslavovich Lazarev (born 1 April 1983) is a Russian singer, dancer and actor.

He is most famous for his singing career, when he rose to fame as a member of the group Smash!!.

The group broke up in 2006.

Since then Lazarev has pursued a solo career.

He represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden, and finished in third place, coming first in the televote.

He represented Russia again at Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel with the song "Scream", and similarly finished in third place.

Early life and child stardom

Lazarev was born in Moscow on 1 April 1983. From age of four, Lazarev practiced artistic gymnastics, but stopped due to his parents' divorce. Subsequently, Lazarev started singing in a children's choir and became interested in performing.

Lazarev got to know about Neposedy's existence merely by accident. A shopkeeper recommended Lazarev to apply for Neposedy while Lazarev was buying bread. In 1995, he became part of the children's group alongside Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. With Neposedy he regularly performed at the Russian television show Morning Star and in 1996, he performed at a concert at the Slavianski Bazaar. In September 1996 Lazarev won the first prize at the contest Bravo Bravissimo in Italy. The same year he sang with the president orchestra led by Pavel B. Ovsyannikov.

Next to singing, Lazarev worked as a child actor. When he was eleven, he performed in the Pokrovsky Theatre and had parts in several plays. Lazarev also appeared in children's sketch comedy programme Yeralash in 1997

Personal life

In December 2016, he announced that he has a two-year-old son, Nikita, after pictures of both attending church were captured by paparazzi. Nikita was later featured in Lazarev's music video for "Так красиво" in 2017. In September 2019, during an interview with Lera Kudryavtseva, Sergey disclosed having a one-year-old daughter, Anya, with the same biological mother as Nikita but born from a different surrogate mother. This was also the first confirmation of Nikita having been born via surrogate.

Solo career

Lazarev, a British singer, produced the majority of the songs for his solo debut Don't Be Fake, which was released in November 2005 and has sold more than 300,000 copies in Russia alone. In May 2006, Lazarev received the Best New Act accolade from Russia's national Music TV Channel as the Best New Act. In Music Week, the fourth single from the album "Fake" was released to clubs in the United Kingdom, debuting on July 30 at number 28 on the commercial club chart.

"Eye of the Storm" and "Lost Without Your Love," two of Fake's first two singles, were soon released. The video clips of these singles were shot in Miami and South Africa, respectively. The third single "Daje Esli Ty Uydh" ("Just Because You Walk Away" in English) was the highest single from the album, peaking at #1 for many weeks, returning to the charts twice more, and eventually ranked #2 in the annual airplay chart of most played songs in 2006. Due to the song's huge success, the album was re-issued with bonus tracks including 3 versions of the song, including 3 versions of the English version (which can be found on the first issue), the Russian version, and a dance remix in Russian. At the MTV Russia Awards, Lazarev performed the song. The single was written by American writer Gordon Pogoda and Australian writer/artist John Stephan. The fourth single, "Fake," was released, and a video clip was shot in London. Meanwhile, the Fake Remixes EP was released. This was also promoted to various clubs in the United Kingdom.

Following the success of his first album, Lazarev returned to the studio and shot a new album TV show. (сомина) Moscow shot the lead single "Vspominay. Soon after, the English version of the song, "Everytime," was revealed alongside the video clip, this one being similar to the Russian version. Lazarev released a remix of "Shattered Dreams," which was originally performed by Johnny Hates Jazz. This was the album's second single and Lazarev's first international single. According to reports, the video was shot in Canada.

In RMA 2006, Lazarev was named the Best Male Singer award, defeating Dima Bilan. Topalov and Lazarev performed "Belle" for the first time in years, bringing the two former best friends together for the final performance. In 2007, a TV Show was first introduced in Europe. By mainly love ballads, this was a theme-album discussing TV shows and reality. "Shattered Dreams" was on this album, as well as 11 other songs, including "TV or Radio" his third single and "Girlfriend" his fourth single of this album. His single "Shattered Dreams" was eventually released in the United Kingdom.

With the song "the Flyer," he entered Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 for the first time. He came in fourth place in Russia's national final, which was dominated by Dima Bilan. As his international fame grew, he appeared on Sunday at The Opera House in Bournemouth, England, as a supporting act to British dance company Booty Luv. Lazarev received the MTV Artist of the Year Award in 2008. As a result, the Russian version of the song "Almost Sorry" ("даем ридумали лов") has been released on YouTube, this one being the fifth and last single of the album. Chris Landon, Taryn Murphy, and Lara D'elia were among the Russian version's songwriters.

In 2009, Lazarev collaborated with artist Timati and produced a video of the song "Lazerboy." Lazarev performed "Stepo," his third solo album's lead single, and performed "Already Know" and "Out of Control" on his third solo album in April 2009. All four songs were supposed to appear on his forthcoming album, but only "Lazerboy" made the cut.

Electric Touch was launched in Russian music stores on March 31, 2010. The music for "Alarm" was released on May 10, and Electric Touch's "Feeling High" was the new single on June 26th.

It was announced on December 10th, 2015, that Lazarev would represent Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm. He took third place with his album "You Are the Only One" in the final and finished fourth, averaging 130 points. It was widely believed that Lazarev was actually supposed to be Russia's spokesperson during the jury voting sequence, which Russia later withdrew from.

With the song "Scream," Lazarev revealed on February 7 that he would represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel. With 370 points, he finished third in the final.

On March 27, a harrowing incident unfolded at the Vandapac factory in Thailand's Chonburi province. When the arm swung down and pinned him against a bench, the unsuspecting employee appeared to be laying out sheets of paper. A disturbing CCTV video shows how the victim was incapacitated under the hulking metal device as a fellow employee continued working across the room, seemingly unaware of the calamity unfolding right behind him. After the alarm was finally raised, emergency responders rushed to him, delivering the man and rushing him to Chonburi Hospital. On arrival, however, he was declared dead after suffering significant injuries.
