CRAIG BROWN: Marx my words, that will annoy Rachmaninoff!

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2023
Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 was recently voted in Classic FM's Top of the Pops, defeating Vaughan Williams' ever-popular The Lark Ascending. It's unlikely that Rachmaninoff would have been enthralled by this coveted award. He was a gloomy character, and as a number of artists, he began to loot his most popular pieces. Prelude In C-Sharp Minor, his second most popular piece, was produced in 1892, when he was 19 years old. It seemed that it had appeared from nowhere. 'It came with such power that I could not shake it off even though I tried to do so decades later.' It received immediate notice, and it was likely to haunt him for the remainder of his life. Audiences would not be satisfied until they heard the Prelude In C-Sharp Minor.
