Career

Astin's first acting appearance was in the 1981 television film Please Don't Hit Me, Mom, in which he played an 8-year-old boy with an abusive mother (portrayed by his real-life mother Patty Duke). In 1985, Mikey made his film debut in The Goonies at the age of 13.

Astin appeared in numerous films after The Goonies, including the Disney made-for-TV film The B.R.A.T. Patrol with Nia Long, Tim Thomerson, and Brian Keith (1987); Like Father Like Son (1989); The War of the Roses (1990); For the life of the titular character, Daniel Ruettiger (1991); the World War II film Memphis Belle (1990); The War of the Roses (1989); The War of the Roses (1989); Irma (1993); and the college football biopic Rudy (1992), about the challenges and rewards of the titular character, Daniel Ruettiger

Astin produced and co-produced the short film Kangaroo Court in 1994, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film. Astin appeared in films throughout the 1990s, including the showtime science fiction film Courage Under Fire (1996), and the Warren Beatty political satire Bulworth (1998).

Astin appeared in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, which included The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and Return of the King (2003). Many accolades were given to the trilogy, especially the final installment, which received eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Astin received seven award nominations for his own work, five of which were for Best Supporting Actor, the Sierra Award, the Seattle Film Critics Award, and the Utah Film Critics Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Effects Film, among other categories. The Return of the King cast as an ensemble was honoured by the National Board of Motion Pictures, the Screen Actors Guild, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, and the Gold Derby Prize.

Astin became close friends with several cast members, and became a good friend with costar Elijah Wood during the filming process. Alexandra, Astin's niece, appears in The Return of the King's closing scene. Elanor Gamgee, his on-screen daughter, who is found out as he returns from the Grey Havens, is out.

Astin was shooting on The Lord of the Rings, he begged a few fellow cast and crew members, including director Peter Jackson, to assist him in making his second short film, The Long and Short of It. The film, which takes place on a street in Wellington, New Zealand, premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and can be seen on the DVD for The Two Towers as well as a "making of" video.

There and Back Again (ISBN 0-312-33146-0), a memoir (co-written with Joe Layden) of his film career in 2004, Astin published There and Back Again (ISBN 0-312-33146-0), focusing on his experiences during the production of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Dutton and Chelcie Ross), and Law & Order among other programs. "Soulless" was a 2003 episode of the television series Angel. On the second season of Showtime's Jeremiah, he appeared as enigmatic Mr. Smith.

Astin's career has also embraced voice-over roles. He narrated the American version of the Animal Planet series Meerkat Manor and portrayed the title character in Special Agent Oso, which aired on Playhouse Disney from 2009 to 2011, and Disney Junior from 2011 to early 2014. Balto III: Wings of Change, a teenage husky who is the son of the titular character, and the video game Kingdom Hearts were among his other voice jobs, replacing actress Tate Donovan, who was unable but would return for Kingdom Hearts II. Raphael appeared in Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated film, which premiered on September 29, 2012, and ended on September 12, 2017.

He appeared in the Stella Adler Los Angeles Theatre Collective in 2010. Astin and his partner, Christine, were producing a film based on Lois Lowry's Newbery Medal-winning book Number the Stars, which was released in 2010. They acquired the film rights in 2008 and wrote a screenplay sequel, with plans to direct and produce it themselves.

Astin appeared in a fake movie trailer called Boobathon, which appeared on Funny or Die in March 2012. Astin played a soldier in Boys of Abu Ghraib, a military drama influenced by the 2004 events that made global news. He debuted in June of this year as Jim Kent on the FX drama The Strain.

Astin appeared in Woodlawn in October 2015, a tale about how a high school football team overcame bigotry and bigotry to find peace and happiness by following Jesus.

In season two of Netflix's Stranger Things, Astin appeared as Bob Newby.
