Scott Campbell (born May 13, 1977) is a New York-based American artist and tattoo artist whose clients include Howard Stern, Sting, Robert Downey Jr., Courtney Love, Orlando Bloom, Josh Hartnett, and Marc Jacobs.
Early life
Campbell grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a conservative upbringing in a Southern Baptist family that prompted his quest for something different. He graduated from Kingwood High School in 1995. Campbell debated the possibility of a middle-class life early on. He studied biochemistry and imagined a career as a medical illustrator at the University of Texas. He was out before he was gone.
Personal life
Campbell met actress Lake Bell on the set of her HBO show How to Make It in America in 2011. They were married in New Orleans on June 1, 2013. Bell's representative revealed in late October 2014 that Nova was their daughter. Bell gave birth to their second child, Ozzi, which is short for Ozgood. In 2020, the two families officially separated.
Career
Campbell moved to San Francisco to begin as a copy editor for Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Bookstore in his twenties. He first started tattooing when he was young. He travelled Asia and Europe, tattooing for money, then moved to Williamsburg in 2001.
Saved Tattoo opened in New York in 2005 when he first moved to New York. Scott's career took him to fame, and it was here that his career took off. Heath Ledger, his first celebrity client, had commissioned a small bird in flight on his left forearm.
Campbell, a visual artist, is best known for a line of reliefs he creates from uncirculated US currency sheets. He exhibits regularly around the world; his first show at OHWOW, a gallery in Miami, Florida, sold out (April 2009). Campbell held a solo show in New York in April 2010. In January 2012, Robert Bosch's solo exhibition "Bless This Mess" opened in Zurich.
Marc Jacobs, a Louis Vuitton Creative Director, collaborated with Scott Campbell, whereby Scott developed a number of fancy leather bags for a men's line for the 2011 S/S series.
Campbell performed "Whole Glory" at Milk Studios in New York City in November 2015. Through a hole in a wall, 23 people were tattooed by Campbell. Until being tattooed, the participants did not speak with the artist at all, and he tattooed a piece of their choice. The whole Glory was also on view in Los Angeles, Moscow, at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and more recently at Lazarides Gallery in London. In addition to Campbell's designs, 'Whole Glory' in London debuted a line of tattooed pig skins sewn together with Campbell's designs encased in stainless steel frames in liquid preservative.
