Benjamin Sherman Crothers (May 23, 1910-1986), also known as Scatman Crothers, was an American actor and singer.
In Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), he appeared Louie the Garbage Man on the television show Chico and the Man and Dick Hallorann.
He was also a prolific voiceover actor who appeared in The Transformers and The Human Race (1986), the title character in Hong Kong Phooey and Scat Cat in the animated Disney film The Aristocats (1970).
Music career
He began his musical career as a child. He played and was self-educated on guitar and drums. In Terre Haute, he was in a band that competed in speakeasies. He formed a band, spent eight years in Akron, Ohio, and appeared on a radio show in Dayton, Ohio, every week. The station manager wanted a catchier name, so Crothers suggested "Scatman" for his scat singing. Helen, a native of Steubenville, Ohio, was married in 1937. The couple immigrated to California in the 1940s.
He appeared in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Harlem, New York City. Many of Capitol's singles include "I'd Rather Be a Hummingbird," "Blue-eyed Sally" and "Television Blues." Rock and Roll was released by High Fidelity Records, with Scatman Crothers. He and Bob Hope were on USO tours together. The Crothers have also performed with bandleader Slim Gaillard. Crothers performed "The Death of Emmett Till" (1955), a recording by A. C. Bilbrew, according to the jacket notes on the Let Freedom Sing CD set.
Film and television career
Crothers made his debut in the film Meet Me at the Fair (1953). Hello Dolly! He appeared in the film musicals. (1969) and The Great White Hope (1970) before assisting "Scat Cat" in the animated film The Aristocats (also 1970). He appeared in four films with Jack Nicholson: The King of Marvin Gardens (1972), The Fortune (1975), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and The Shining (1980). He appeared in the animated film Coonskin (1975), a train porter in Silver Streak (1976), a baseball coach in Zapped (1980), a ringmaster in Bronco Billy (1980), a ringmaster. In Two of a Kind (1983) and Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), there are angels (1982).
When he joined Dixie Showboat, he became the first black person to appear on a Los Angeles television show. He appeared on two episodes of Laverne & Shirley as a porter in 1980. On the television series The Transformers, he performed the Autobot Jazz in the 1980s.
