Sauli Niinisto Career

Career

Before entering national politics, Niinistö owned his own law firm in Salo from 1978-88.

Niinistö served on Salo's municipal council from 1977 to 1992, and in 1989, he was elected a Member of the Parliament of Finland from the district of Finland Proper. In 1994, he was elected to chair the NCP as party chairman and later became Justice Minister in Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen's first cabinet.

Niinistö became Finance Minister in 1996, serving in Lipponen's second cabinet from 1999 to 2003, moving portfolios. Niinistö, a deputy prime minister under social democrat Lipponen, served in both administrations. Niinistö, the Finance Minister, was known for his tight fiscal policy. On January 1, 2002, he was the first Finn to make a purchase with euros. Niinistö was encouraged by his party to run as a candidate in the 2000 presidential election, but he turned down the nomination for completely personal reasons. In 2001, he announced his gradual withdrawal from politics, and Ville Itälä was elected party leader that year. Niinistö became vice president of the European Investment Bank at the end of his term as a cabinet minister in 2003.

Niinistö declared his candidacy for the 2006 presidential election in March 2005. He vowed the NCP in an election against incumbent President Tarja Halonen. He registered for the second round run-off (as one of the top two candidates in the first round) on January 29, 2006, but lost to Halonen. Niinistö's campaign cost about 2,225,000 euros, with 492,864 euros and 717,191 euros from NCP. In 2009, his financial statements in 2006 became more detailed due to controversies.

Niinistö, a 2006 politician, declared that he would contest again in the 2007 parliamentary election. However, he said he had no plans to pursue any high-ranking political position, such as prime ministership in the future. In the 2007 elections, he received 60,563 votes, a record in a Finnish parliamentary election; it was up by almost 21% more than Hertta Kuusinen's 1948 record. Niinistö accepted the position of Speaker of the Parliament following the 2007 election. In 2002, Niinistö began negotiations to join the European Democratic Union (EDU) into the EPP and became the Honorary President of the European Democrat Union (EDU).

Niinistö was elected president of the Football Association of Finland on November 8, 2009, after Pekka Hämäläinen was deposed.

Finland goes to the polls: In a period of growing tensions with Russia over border conflict and the Ukraine war, 4.5 million people are likely to vote

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 28, 2024
Today, voters in Finland are voting for a new president as they prepare to elect a new president amid rising tensions with Russia. It's an unprecedented moment for the Nordic nation, which is not only a member of NATO, but also has its eastern boundary to Russia closed - two things that were previously unimaginable just a few years ago. Polls around the country started at 9 a.m. this morning and will close at 8 p.m. tonight.

Biden returned home from a trip to Lithuania, Latvia, and Finland, pledging to protect 'every inch' of NATO territory.

Turkey has accepted a bill that will allow Finland to join NATO

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 30, 2023
On Thursday, Turkey's parliament (left) approved a bill authorizing Finland to join NATO, paving the way for it to join the Western defense alliance as war rages in Ukraine. After Hungary's legislature passed a related bill earlier this week, Turkey was the last among the 30 NATO members to ratify Finland's membership. President Tayyip Erdogan (pictured shaking hands with Finland President Sauli Niinisto, right) said earlier this month that after taking concrete steps to crack down on groups identified as terrorists in Ankara and free up defence exports, Erdogan would have received Turkey's permission.
