Saul Rubinek Career

Career

Rubinek began taking acting lessons and joined the Ottawa Little Theatre at the behest of his parents. He debuted at the Stratford Festival in 1969. He was a member of the Toronto Theatre Company, co-founding the Canadian Stage Company, and co-working with Theatre Passe Muraille as an actor and producer. He began working in the 1970s as an actor in Off-Broadway productions. He received the Drama-Logue Award for Des McAnuff's La Jolla production of As You Like It in 1984.

Rubinek first captured Canadian audiences' interest in two television films, The Suicide Murders (1985) and Murder Sees the Sun (1986), which are based on books in author Howard Engel's series of mystery novels set in the Niagara Region of Canada. Owen Hughes, the antagonist, appeared in Obsessed (1987). He appeared in another television film, Liberace: Behind the Music (1988), as Seymour Heller, the long-time friend and boss of Liberace.

He appeared in Allan in the sex-themed romantic comedy Soup for One, directed and written by Jonathan Kaufer and produced by Marvin Worth in 1982. Rubinek appeared in Taylor Hackford's Against All Odds (1984), Alan Alda's Sweet Liberty (1988) as a lawyer, as a litigator, and in a lead role as a rabbi in The Quarities (1991). He is best known for his role as a pulp fiction writer in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992). Lee Donowitz, a pompous, cocaine-addicted film director based on Joel Silver, was a key character in Tony Scott's True Romance (1993) as Lee Donowitz, a pompous, cocaine-addicted film director based on Joel Silver.

He co-starred in the 1993 Emmy Award-winning American made-for-television docudrama And the Band Played On as Dr. Jim Curran. In the Star Trek: The Most Toys video game "The Most Toys," Rubinek played Kivas Fajo. Rubinek, a ardent Star Trek fan, took over the role shortly after David Rappaport, the actor who had been originally cast in the role, attempted suicide shortly after the episode's filming began. (Rappaport died of suicide just before the episode premiered.) Two photographs of Rubinek in appearance were used on two cards in Decipher's 1994 ST:TNG card game: a character card titled "Kivas Fajo" and an event card titled "Kivas Fajo: Collector." "The Fajo Collection," a limited (40,000 copies) version of 18 new cards, was introduced in 1998 as an addition to this card game.

In a two-part episode titled "Heroes, Parts 1 & 2," Rubinek played another science fiction role. Emmett Bregman, a documentary film director, appeared on the seventh season of the Canadian-American military science fiction television series Stargate SG-1.

In several episodes of the American sitcom Frasier, Donny Douglas (Daphne Moon's fiancé and Niles Crane's divorce counsel) appeared.

In two episodes of The Outer Limits' 1995 revival, he appeared in various roles. Louis the Lion appeared on YTV's The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon (1995). In the film Rush Hour 2, he made a cameo appearance as a casino pit boss.

In the 2000 film The Family Man, Rubinek played Alan Mintz opposite Nicolas Cage. Rubinek performed Detective Saul Panzer in The Golden Spiders: A Nero Wolfe Mystery, the series's debut of reporter Lon Cohen, who would later appear in the recurring role of reporter Lon Cohen. He appeared in the short-lived American television series Blind Justice from 2005 to 2012, and he appeared in the Jesse Stone series of television films starring Tom Selleck from 2006 to 2012.

Dr. Saul Funkhouser's second season of Lost's second season, as well as a 2008 episode of the television show Psychiasm, are among his single-episode guest appearances during the 2000s. Victor Dubenich, the antagonist in Leverage's pilot episode, returned to Leverage in 2012 for the final two episodes of season 4. He appeared in two subsequent episodes of the television series Person of Interest in 2013.

He produced the independent film Cruel but Necessary in 2005. He appeared in a supporting role in the 2009 Canadian film comedy The Trotsky. Arthur "Artie" Nielsen, a clandestine council agent employed by a covert organisation in order to retrieve mystical artifacts with his team, appeared in the Syfy series Warehouse 13 as Arthur "Artie" Nielsen, a slew of agents hired by a clandestine council to locate mystical objects with his team. On May 19, 2014, the series's finale was broadcast on Syfy.
