Sarah Gertrude Shapiro Career

Career

Shapiro interned at Christine Vachon's film company, Killer Films, and then spent time as a studio manager for photographer David LaChapelle. Shapiro moved to Los Angeles, California, after being affected by the September 11 attacks and wanting to be closer to family.

Shapiro found work on the reality television show High School Reunion, unknowingly signing a deal with the production company that permitted them to shift her to other shows at their discretion, as well as the commitment of Shapiro to "unlimited renewable options for perpetuity." Shapiro will eventually work as a producer on The Bachelor TV series, a role she adored, but it would play a huge part in her later career. She appeared on the program for four seasons over the course of two years, from associate producer to field producer.

Shapiro, a television sales rep who was unable to relocate to reality television and end her restrictive non-compete employment deal (which was only effective in California), then moved to Portland, Oregon, where she worked with Wieden + Kennedy in 2005. Shapiro had worked at the Northwest Film Center in Portland, Oregon, where she met filmmaker Miranda July and other local artists and filmmakers. She had intended to be a kale farmer from the start.

Shapiro served as a producer, making multimedia for short forms and documentaries at Wieden + Kennedy. Wieden + Kennedy was a pioneer of her creative ventures, allowing Shapiro to take leave and providing funding for Sequin Raze's Kickstarter campaign. Shapiro worked on Sequin Raze, a four-year project while at Wieden + Kennedy, for four years.

She was one of eight women selected for the American Film Institute's Directing Workshop for Women (DWW), where she wrote and directed the short film Sequin Raze, starring Anna Camp, Ashley Williams, and Frances Conroy. The film went on to win Honorable Mention at the South by Southwest Film Festival's Short Film Jury Awards, as well as screenings at the New Directors/New Film Festival in New York (MoMA/Lincoln Center) and the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Shapiro was partnered with Lifetime, where she pitched the show without an agent, and was partnered with writer Marti Noxon.

UnREAL, inspired by Sequin Raze, was launched by Lifetime on July 30, 2013. Shapiro and Marti Noxon wrote the pilot and A+E Studios produced it. UnREAL was green-lit, with a 10-episode series order, and premiered in June 2015.

Shapiro is listed as a co-creator, writer, and supervising producer on the show. The series was revived for a second season of ten episodes on July 6, 2015, and it will premiere in 2016. In a lengthy 2016 interview with writer D.T., she discussed the series's development. Max.

Shapiro's previous work as a field producer on the American reality dating show The Bachelor was the source of both the short film and the Lifetime series. In an independent Tedx TED conference, she spoke about her experiences navigating Hollywood's inner life.
