Early life
Sarah Shahi was born in Aahoo, Texas, United States, on January 10, 1980. She was raised in Euless, Texas, United States, by Abbas Jahansouzshahi and Mahmonir Soroushazar, an interior designer who divorced when she was ten years old. Her father is from Iran. Her father's family left Iran two years before the Iranian Revolution. When the previous Shah's reign fell in 1979, her father, who was stationed at the American embassy in Iran, was slated for execution, but she was able to flee the country. Her mother was born in Spain, to an Iranian father and a Spanish mother. Shahi has an older brother, Cyrus, and Samantha, a younger sister who works as a production assistant. In Persian, Aahoo (Persian: ) denotes 'gazelle.' Shahi adopted Sarah as her name in second grade after hearing a song called "Sarah" by other children because she was "tormented" by other children about her birth name, Aahoo. She grew up speaking Persian at her father's behest in comparison to English. At the age of eight, Shahi's parents began competing in beauty pageants. Shahi attended Trinity High School, where she was captain of the volleyball and basketball teams, and Southern Methodist University, majoring in English and Theater. During her time at SMU, she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. In 1997, Shahi took home the Miss Fort Worth pageant. Despite not having cheered before, she hoped to become an actress and joined the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (1999–2000) squad, aspiring to be an actor. She migrated to Los Angeles later this year.
Personal life
Howey, a retired Shahi actor, married in Las Vegas on February 7, 2009. During an at-home water birth in July 2009, she gave birth to their first child, a boy. She revealed she was pregnant with twins in January 2015. A daughter and son were born in March at a different home birth. In May 2020, Shahi and Howey filed for divorce. In January 2021, the couple's divorce was finalized.
Shahi began dating Australian actor Adam Demos, whom she first encountered on the set of Sex/Life in 2020.

Career
Shahi encountered director Robert Altman, who pushed her to Hollywood, where she appeared in several series, including Alias, Dawson's Creek, Reba, and Supernatural, while appearing as an extra on the set of Dr. T and the Women in Texas. In 2005, she appeared on The L Word's supporting character role, DJ Carmen de la Pica Morales. After the fourth season, Shahi's two-year deal was not renewed, and her character had been written out.
