She made her debut in a leading role in Swan Lake's dual roles of Odette/Odile at the age of 19.

Mearns was promoted to soloist in 2006 and to principal in 2008.

On the Town, her Broadway debut in 2015 was in "Lonely Town" pas de deux from Tony-nominated musical On the Town, choreographed by Joshua Bergasse.

She has also collaborated with modern dance choreographer Jodi Melnick, resulting in the piece's premiere at the Guggenheim Museum in November 2016.

Early life

Mearns was born in Columbia, South Carolina. Her mother is a nurse. Ann Brodie, who grew up in Columbia, began dancing with her at the Calvert-Brodie School of Dance, also in Columbia. Mearns studied with Patricia McBride at the School of North Carolina Dance Theatre at the age of 13, and at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities the next year. Mearns transferred to New York in 2001 to attend the School of American Ballet.

Personal life

Mearns auditioned for a featured dancing role on Smash in November 2012. The dance number had been reduced, but two couples had started dating a few months later. They got engaged on Valentine's Day after five years of dating. They were married in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, on November 3, 2018. Since Bergasse is a choreographer, they collaborate on each other's projects.
